MCP for accounting lets an AI assistant read and update your books through a secure connection. You can ask "What did we spend on software last quarter?" or "Draft invoices for these three clients" in plain English. As of October 2026, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Stripe all have MCP servers. A newer group of ledgers is built around MCP from the start.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI apps to other software. Each connection runs through an MCP server, a small program that tells the AI which tools it can use. If you are new to this, start with What Is MCP?.
Books are different from most data. A wrong entry can flow into tax filings. So this guide covers both what the servers can do and the controls to put in place first. We checked each one against its publisher's docs or site on 28 October 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Xero publishes an official MCP server with tools for contacts, invoices, bank transactions, reports and, in the UK and NZ, payroll.
- A QuickBooks Online MCP server in Intuit's GitHub organization runs locally and lets you switch off create, update and delete tools.
- Stripe's hosted MCP server covers payments, invoices, payouts and balance data, with human confirmation on refunds and outbound payments.
- MCP-native ledgers such as LedgerMCP and BalanceMCP enforce balanced double-entry books at the system level, so the AI can't post unbalanced entries.
- Start read-only, keep a lock date on closed periods, and make sure every AI change shows up in an audit log.
What MCP changes for bookkeeping
Most bookkeeping time goes to three jobs: getting transactions in, putting them in the right accounts and checking the totals. MCP lets an AI help with all three, inside a conversation.
Typical requests:
- "Categorize last month's uncategorized bank transactions and show me anything you're unsure about."
- "Run a profit and loss for Q3 and compare it with Q2."
- "Which customers have invoices more than 60 days overdue?"
- "Create a draft invoice for Acme for 10 hours at our standard rate."
The AI does the lookup and the first draft. You, or your bookkeeper, approve what gets posted. For more examples across departments, see MCP Examples: 25 Real Business Uses.
The main options at a glance
| Option | Publisher | Runs | Notable controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xero MCP server | Xero (XeroAPI on GitHub) | Local | Custom Connection or bearer-token sign-in |
| QuickBooks Online MCP server | Intuit GitHub organization | Local | Flags to disable write, update or delete tools |
| Stripe MCP server | Stripe | Hosted | Human confirmation on refunds and payouts |
| LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) | LedgerMCP | Hosted | Balanced entries enforced; reversible changes |
| BalanceMCP (eSEOspace marketing client) | BalanceMCP | Hosted | Database-enforced balance; append-only journal |
Each is described below.
Xero
Xero publishes its MCP server on GitHub under the XeroAPI organization, with an MIT license.
The tool list in the README covers:
- Contacts: list, create and update contacts, plus aged receivables and payables by contact.
- Sales: invoices, credit notes and quotes.
- Ledger: accounts, manual journals, items and tax rates.
- Banking: payments and bank transactions.
- Reports: profit and loss, trial balance and balance sheet.
- Payroll: employees, leave and timesheets. The README says payroll queries need the organization to be in New Zealand or the UK.
Sign-in has two modes. A Custom Connection uses a client ID and secret for one organization, which the README recommends for testing and for apps like Claude Desktop. A bearer token suits setups that switch between several Xero organizations.
QuickBooks Online
A QuickBooks Online MCP server is published in Intuit's GitHub organization. It runs locally on your computer and signs in with OAuth 2.0 through an app you register on the Intuit Developer Portal.
Per its README, it offers:
- Tools for 29 entity types, including customers, invoices, bills, vendors, accounts, journal entries, payments and purchase orders.
- 11 reports, including balance sheet, profit and loss, cash flow, trial balance, general ledger and aged receivables and payables.
- Settings that stop write, update or delete tools from loading, while read tools stay available.
The README suggests starting in the QuickBooks sandbox. Production needs a public HTTPS redirect address, because Intuit rejects localhost there. In practice, that means a developer should handle the first setup.
Stripe
If Stripe processes your revenue, its hosted MCP server is useful for the revenue side of the books.
Stripe's list of supported methods includes balance and balance transactions, payouts, invoices, credit notes, subscriptions, refunds and tax settings. It also has an analytics tool, in preview, for querying metrics and running financial reports.
The controls are strong:
- Stripe requires human confirmation before certain write actions, "such as refunds and outbound payments."
- You can connect with OAuth or with agent API keys limited to what the AI needs.
- Stripe says that from December 2026 it will stop accepting full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the Agent tag for MCP. Migrate to OAuth or an agent API key by 30 November 2026.
Stripe is not a general ledger. Use it alongside your accounting system, not instead of it.
MCP-native ledgers
A newer approach puts the ledger itself behind MCP. Instead of connecting an AI to existing accounting software, the software is designed for an AI to operate from day one. Two examples involve eSEOspace. We built LedgerMCP. BalanceMCP is a marketing client: we work on its website and search marketing, not its software. The descriptions below come from each product's own site.
LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace)
LedgerMCP describes itself as "Double-entry bookkeeping software with a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server built in."
Its site says the AI can import bank statements, categorize transactions, reconcile accounts and produce reports such as P&L, balance sheet and trial balance.
Points from its site:
- "Your AI cannot write books that don't balance."
- Changes are logged and reversible, with the author of each change recorded.
- Bank connections run through Plaid, and read-only API keys are available.
- It lists Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Grok and Cursor, plus any MCP client.
- As of October 2026, its site lists a free plan and paid tiers starting at $9 a month.

BalanceMCP (eSEOspace marketing client)
BalanceMCP describes itself as bookkeeping "on a double-entry ledger that will not let it make the books wrong." Its site says the AI can categorize transactions, reconcile accounts and produce financial statements.
Points from its site:
- "Entries must balance or the database rejects them."
- The journal is append-only, so corrections are made by reversal, and locked periods can't receive new postings.
- Bank statements import as PDF or CSV and are checked against opening and closing balances.
- Its site says automatic bank connections "are still being built."
- As of October 2026, it lists a free plan, with a paid Plus tier marked "Coming soon."

Controls your books need before you connect an AI
Whatever you choose, put these in place first.
- Read-only first. Spend a few weeks asking questions before you allow any posting.
- Lock closed periods. A lock date stops anyone, including an AI, from changing a month you've already closed or filed.
- Audit trail. Every AI change should show who or what made it and when.
- Reversible changes. Corrections should be new entries, not silent edits.
- Human approval on money. Payments, refunds and payroll should never run without a person approving.
- Limited access. Use OAuth or scoped keys, and remove access when a person or tool no longer needs it.
- Your accountant in the loop. Tell your CPA or bookkeeper what the AI is doing. They'll spot problems faster than anyone.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AI do my bookkeeping through MCP?
It can do much of the routine work, such as categorizing transactions, drafting invoices and running reports. You still need a person to review, approve postings and handle judgment calls. Treat the AI as a fast assistant, not as your accountant.
Is it safe to connect QuickBooks or Xero to an AI?
It can be, if you limit access. Use the sandbox or a test organization first, switch off write tools until you trust the setup, and keep closed periods locked. Remember that local servers run on your computer, so install them only from the publisher's own repo.
What is an MCP-native ledger?
It is accounting software designed for an AI to operate through MCP from the start. LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) and BalanceMCP (an eSEOspace marketing client) are examples. Their sites say they enforce balanced double-entry books at the system level, so an AI can't post entries that don't balance.
Will my accountant accept books kept with AI help?
Accountants care about accuracy and a clear trail. If every change is logged, corrections are reversals and closed periods are locked, the books are easier to review. Talk to your accountant before you start and agree on what the AI may and may not post.
Does Stripe's MCP server replace accounting software?
No. Stripe holds your payment and revenue data, which is one input to your books. You still need a general ledger for expenses, bank accounts, payroll and tax reporting.
