Best MCP Accounting and Bookkeeping Tools in 2026

This article is part of our MCP Guide: what the Model Context Protocol is, how to use it safely, and how to choose servers, tools and help. Want a second opinion on your setup? Request a free MCP readiness review.

The main MCP accounting and bookkeeping tools in 2026 fall into two groups. MCP-native ledgers, such as LedgerMCP and BalanceMCP, are built for an AI assistant to keep the books. Established platforms, including QuickBooks Online, Xero, Zoho Books, Stripe and Ramp, now publish their own MCP servers.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets an AI app like Claude or ChatGPT connect to outside software. For bookkeeping, that means your AI can import transactions, categorize them, reconcile accounts and run reports.

We checked every entry against the vendor's own site or docs on 28 October 2026. We did not test these products with real books for this article.

Disclosure: eSEOspace built LedgerMCP. BalanceMCP is an eSEOspace marketing client: we work on its website and search marketing, not its software. Both are listed first because they are the MCP-native ledgers; the order is not a ranking.

Key Takeaways

  • MCP-native ledgers (LedgerMCP and BalanceMCP) are built around an AI keeping the books, with database-level guardrails and audit logs.
  • QuickBooks Online and Xero each offer a hosted connector in Claude's directory plus an official open-source server you run on your own computer. Xero's hosted connector is read-only.
  • Zoho Books offers an official connector in Claude's directory, plus a Zoho MCP service for other AI apps.
  • Stripe and Ramp are not general ledgers, but their MCP servers cover billing, spend and approvals data your books depend on.
  • We found no official MCP server from FreshBooks, Sage or Brex, only community projects, so they are not listed.
  • For accounting, look for read-only keys, reversible entries, period locks and audit logs before you let an AI write.

How we chose

We used the MCP Guide's standard listicle criteria:

  • Live and public. The product and its MCP server must exist and be documented on the vendor's own site or official repository.
  • Clear pricing. The vendor must publish pricing, or the server must be free and open source.
  • Security basics. The docs must describe authentication, permissions or logging.

We dropped community-built servers for accounting platforms, because financial data needs a supported connection. The order below groups similar tools and is not a ranking.

1. LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace): free bookkeeping your AI can run

What it is. LedgerMCP describes itself as "Free bookkeeping software. Connect Claude or ChatGPT, and your AI keeps the books." Its site says it is double-entry accounting with bank reconciliation, live reports, Schedule C prep and a 1099 report. LedgerMCP's docs list 74 tools, 26 read-only and 48 that write. Read more in our LedgerMCP client spotlight.

Best for: Small business owners, freelancers, landlords and bookkeepers who want an AI to do the day-to-day bookkeeping.

Pricing: Free at $0, with unlimited books, all reports and your own AI over MCP. Paid plans add live bank feeds: Starter at $9 per month, Growth at $39 and Scale at $249, per LedgerMCP's pricing page.

Pros:

  • Read-only API keys can run every list and report but cannot write, per the docs.
  • The site says every AI change is logged with its author and can be reversed in one click.
  • Bank connections run through Plaid, and the site says, "We never store your bank login."

Cons:

  • Live bank feeds on the Free plan last 14 days, for up to five accounts.
  • It is a newer product, so check that its reports fit how your accountant works.

Checked against: LedgerMCP docs on 28 October 2026.

2. BalanceMCP (eSEOspace marketing client): a strict double-entry ledger for AI

What it is. BalanceMCP calls itself "A real double-entry ledger your AI can use." Its site says your assistant imports PDF or CSV statements, categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts and produces live reports. Its tools page lists 19 tools: 8 that change the books and 11 that only read. Read more in our BalanceMCP client spotlight.

Best for: Owners who want strong guardrails and are happy to import bank statements by hand.

Pricing: Free at $0, "forever," with unlimited books, all 19 tools and full CSV export. A Plus plan at $9 per month is listed as "Coming soon" and not yet available, per BalanceMCP's site.

Pros:

  • The site says unbalanced entries are refused by a database trigger, not by a prompt.
  • History is append-only: corrections are made by reversal, and closed periods can be locked.
  • Its security page says keys are stored only as hashes and secrets are redacted from the audit log.

Cons:

  • Automatic bank feeds are "still being built," so every statement is imported by hand today.
  • The security page states there are no scoped or read-only keys yet, no SOC 2 certification and no third-party penetration test.

Checked against: BalanceMCP site on 28 October 2026.

3. QuickBooks Online MCP server: Intuit's hosted connector and open-source server

What it is. Intuit's QuickBooks Online MCP server "lets AI assistants access QuickBooks data via a standard interface." It runs locally on your computer. The README lists 145 tools across 29 entity types, plus 11 financial reports such as Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss. Intuit also offers a hosted QuickBooks connector: Claude's directory lists it as "Made by Intuit QuickBooks" at https://ai-inc.quickbooks.intuit.com/v1/mcp, with 74 tools, including tools that create and delete invoices.

Best for: QuickBooks Online users. The hosted connector suits non-technical owners; the open-source server suits teams with a developer.

Pricing: Free and open source. You need a QuickBooks Online subscription and an app registered on the Intuit Developer Portal.

Pros:

  • Write, update and delete tools can be turned off with configuration flags.
  • Uses OAuth 2.0 with refresh tokens that rotate automatically.
  • Covers the full QuickBooks data model, not just invoices.

Cons:

  • Setup requires a developer app, a one-time browser sign-in and, for production, a public HTTPS callback URL.
  • The hosted connector includes write and delete tools, so check which tools are allowed before you connect it.

Checked against: Intuit's GitHub repository and Claude's QuickBooks listing on 28 October 2026. Full profile: QuickBooks MCP server.

4. Xero MCP server: read-only hosted connector and open-source server

What it is. The Xero MCP server is published by Xero's official GitHub organization and bridges MCP and Xero's accounting API. Tools cover invoices, credit notes, quotes, payments, contacts, payroll timesheets and reports such as profit and loss and aged receivables. Xero also offers a hosted connector at https://mcp.xero.com/mcp, which Claude's directory describes as read-only.

Best for: Small businesses and accountants using Xero.

Pricing: Free and open source under the MIT license. You need a Xero subscription and a Xero developer account.

Pros:

  • Supports Xero custom connections for one organization, or bearer tokens for multi-account use.
  • Scopes can be set with an environment variable.
  • Includes payroll tools, which many accounting servers lack.

Cons:

  • The open-source server requires Node.js and API credentials, so a developer should set it up. The hosted connector cannot write.
  • Scope rules differ for custom connections created before and after 29 April 2026.

Checked against: Xero's GitHub repository and Claude's Xero listing on 28 October 2026. Full profile: Xero MCP server.

5. Zoho Books MCP: official connector for Zoho users

What it is. Zoho's help docs describe an official Zoho Books MCP. It can create and send invoices, record expenses, reconcile bank transactions, chase overdue invoices and pull reports. For AI apps other than Claude, you set it up through Zoho MCP.

Best for: Businesses already using Zoho Books and other Zoho apps.

Pricing: Not stated on Zoho's MCP pages. Zoho MCP offers a free sign-up; check Zoho Books' plan page for your subscription.

Pros:

  • Available as a connector in Claude's directory, so setup is a few clicks.
  • Zoho MCP can combine Zoho Books with other Zoho apps, such as Zoho CRM.
  • Zoho says agents act under user-level permissions, with OAuth-based authorization.

Cons:

  • The default Claude connector supports only the tools listed on Zoho's page.
  • Zoho advises getting admin approval before taking actions through the server.

Checked against: Zoho Books help docs on 28 October 2026.

6. Stripe: billing, invoices and revenue data

What it is. Stripe's MCP server is hosted by Stripe and covers invoices, subscriptions, refunds, payouts, balance transactions and tax settings. It also has an analytics tool, in preview, for metrics and financial reports.

Best for: Subscription and invoice-heavy businesses that need payment data in their books.

Pricing: Stripe's MCP docs list no separate fee. Your normal Stripe fees apply.

Pros:

  • Stripe requires human confirmation before certain writes, such as refunds and outbound payments.
  • Admins can enable or disable MCP access for the team, separately for live and sandbox.
  • OAuth sessions can be revoked from the Dashboard.

Cons:

  • It is a payments platform, not a general ledger, so you still need accounting software.
  • API-key users must move to agent API keys or OAuth by 30 November 2026.

Checked against: Stripe docs on 28 October 2026.

7. Ramp: spend, approvals and GL coding

What it is. Ramp's MCP docs say it connects Ramp to AI assistants "so you can query Ramp data and take actions with natural language." Tools cover spend search and exports, approvals, expense submission, card management and GL (general ledger) coding.

Best for: Finance teams that manage company cards, reimbursements and approvals in Ramp.

Pricing: Ramp's Free plan is $0 per user per month, and Plus is $15 per user per month plus a platform fee. Enterprise is custom, per Ramp's pricing page.

Pros:

  • Employees see only their own data, while admins see company-wide data.
  • A demo server with sample data lets you test safely.
  • Separate connections per business keep their sign-in sessions apart.

Cons:

  • Ramp says the MCP server "is subject to change."
  • Bill approvals are not yet available through MCP.

Checked against: Ramp developer docs on 28 October 2026.

MCP-native ledger or a platform's MCP server?

The two groups solve different problems. An MCP-native ledger, such as LedgerMCP or BalanceMCP, is the accounting system itself. Your AI is expected to do the bookkeeping, and the guardrails are built into the ledger.

A platform's MCP server adds AI access to software you already use. If your books live in QuickBooks Online, Xero or Zoho Books, their servers let an AI read and update those books. You keep your current workflows, reports and accountant access.

Payment and spend tools sit alongside either choice. Stripe and Ramp hold data your books depend on, such as invoices, payouts and card spend. Connecting them can cut the time spent chasing that data each month.

If you...Consider
Are starting fresh or want the AI to keep the booksAn MCP-native ledger
Already use QuickBooks, Xero or Zoho BooksThat platform's official server
Need payment or spend data in AI reportsStripe or Ramp, alongside your ledger

What to check before an AI touches your books

Accounting mistakes are costly, so start with read-only access. LedgerMCP offers read-only keys, QuickBooks' open-source server can switch off write tools, and Xero's hosted connector is read-only. Then confirm that entries are reversible and that closed periods can be locked.

Check the audit trail next. You want a log that shows what the AI changed, when, and through which tool. Our guide to MCP security risks explains the wider risks, and the best MCP clients list covers which AI apps let admins control servers.

Finally, involve your accountant or CPA before you switch anything on. If you are unsure whether your business is ready, our MCP readiness audit is a good place to start.

Frequently asked questions

Does QuickBooks have an MCP server?

Yes, two. Intuit's hosted QuickBooks connector is listed in Claude's directory with 74 tools. Intuit also publishes an open-source QuickBooks Online MCP server on GitHub, which runs locally and needs an app registered on the Intuit Developer Portal.

Does Xero have an MCP server?

Yes, two. Xero's hosted connector at mcp.xero.com is read-only. Xero's GitHub organization also publishes an open-source MCP server under the MIT license that covers invoices, contacts, payroll timesheets and reports.

Is there an official FreshBooks MCP server?

We did not find one published by FreshBooks as of October 2026. The FreshBooks MCP servers we found were community projects, so we left them out of this list.

Is it safe to let an AI do my bookkeeping?

It can be, with the right controls. Look for read-only access, entries that can be reversed, period locks and an audit log of every AI change. Keep a human, ideally your accountant, reviewing the books.

What is the difference between LedgerMCP and BalanceMCP?

Both are MCP-native double-entry ledgers. eSEOspace built LedgerMCP, and BalanceMCP is an eSEOspace marketing client. LedgerMCP offers live bank feeds on paid plans, 74 tools and read-only keys. BalanceMCP has 19 tools and strict database guardrails, but bank feeds are still being built.

Do I still need an accountant if I use an MCP accounting tool?

Yes. An AI can categorize and reconcile, but it does not replace professional judgment on tax and compliance. Use these tools to save time on routine work, and keep your accountant reviewing the results.
