BalanceMCP is a double-entry ledger that an AI assistant runs over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). You hand your AI a bank statement, and it imports the rows, categorizes them, reconciles accounts and produces financial statements. The site's headline is "Your AI can finally manage your finances."

Key Takeaways
- BalanceMCP is a hosted MCP server at
https://balancemcp.com/api/mcpwith 19 tools: 8 that change the books and 11 that only read. - It suits people who keep their own books with an AI assistant and are happy to import statements by hand.
- The Free plan is $0 "forever" with all 19 tools; a $9 Plus plan with bank feeds is marked "Coming soon."
- Its guardrails are database rules: unbalanced entries are refused, the journal is append-only and locked periods can't take postings.
- Its security page lists gaps plainly: no read-only keys, no OAuth, no SOC 2 and no third-party penetration test.

What BalanceMCP offers for MCP
BalanceMCP's tools page lists 19 tools in two groups.
Tools that change your books (8): create_book, manage_accounts, import_statement, categorize_transactions, create_rule, post_journal_entry, reverse_entry and lock_period.
Tools that only read (11): these include list_books, list_transactions, reconcile_account, trial_balance, profit_and_loss, balance_sheet and general_ledger. Others flag possible duplicate charges, summarize spending and export a book.
A few design choices stand out:
- Statements in by hand. The home page says you can drop in "a PDF or CSV from any bank." BalanceMCP checks the rows against the statement's opening and closing balance and flags the import if they don't add up.
- Preview first. The tools page says "every tool that touches an existing record previews before it writes." Creating a book is the one exception.
- Reasons shown. The home page says every categorization becomes a balanced journal entry, "and the reasoning comes with it."
The home page says it works with Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), VS Code, Zed and "any MCP client."
Who it's for
BalanceMCP fits owners and households who want an AI to do the bookkeeping on a real ledger, and who are fine importing statements themselves. The home page also covers personal books, with "Unlimited books, business and personal" on the Free plan.
It is a weaker fit if you need automatic bank feeds today. The home page says, "Automatic bank connections are still being built." It is also a weaker fit if your AI app only supports OAuth sign-in. The any MCP client guide says BalanceMCP "currently authenticates only with bearer-token API keys, not OAuth."
Pricing
BalanceMCP has no separate pricing page; its plans are on the home page.
| Plan | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 "forever" | Unlimited books, PDF/CSV/manual import, all 19 tools, every report, CSV export, append-only audit log |
| Plus | $9/month, "Coming soon" | Planned: up to 10 connected accounts and automatic daily bank sync |
The site says Plus is "not yet available to buy."
Security and trust
BalanceMCP's security page says, "enforcement lives in the database, not the app." According to BalanceMCP:
- Each user's books are separated by PostgreSQL row-level security, and the server refuses to run on a connection that could bypass it.
- API keys are stored as a hash, shown once and revocable immediately.
- Every authenticated tool call is written to an append-only audit log, with keys, tokens and passwords redacted.
- Each key is rate-limited per minute.
The same page lists what it does not claim. "There is no read-only or scoped key yet," so any key can post, reverse or lock entries. It says, "We have not obtained SOC 2 or any other certification," and no third-party penetration test has been done.
The permissions page adds that there is no approval workflow: "The preview is a default, not a gate." Treat a BalanceMCP key like a password, and see our guide to excessive permissions in MCP.
