LedgerMCP: What It Offers, Pricing and Alternatives

This spotlight is part of our MCP company spotlights, within The MCP Guide. Building an MCP company? See SEO and GEO for MCP companies.

LedgerMCP is double-entry accounting software with a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server built in, so an AI assistant can keep a small business's books. You connect Claude, ChatGPT, Grok or another MCP client, and the AI imports, categorizes, reconciles and reports. The safety rules live in the database, not in the AI's instructions.

Checked against: LedgerMCP's docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace built LedgerMCP.

This page sticks to what LedgerMCP's site and docs say. For the build story, see our LedgerMCP client spotlight.

Key Takeaways

  • LedgerMCP is a double-entry ledger with a hosted MCP server and 74 tools (26 read-only, 48 write, per its docs).
  • It is for small businesses, freelancers and bookkeepers who want an AI to do the data entry while a person stays in charge.
  • Postings can't be edited or deleted, and every AI write is logged and reversible in one click.
  • Read-only keys, lock dates and a verify_books health check limit what a confused AI can do.
  • The software is free; paid plans from $9 a month add live bank feeds.

What LedgerMCP offers for MCP

LedgerMCP's llms.txt describes "real double-entry accounting software with an MCP server built in." The AI works the books over MCP; the owner checks them in a web app. The tools cover:

  • Getting transactions in: live Plaid bank feeds, or CSV and statement rows the AI imports with import_transactions (and can retract with undo_import).
  • Categorizing: single, split and bulk, each posting a balanced journal entry. Transfers are matched so nothing posts twice.
  • Reconciling and closing: reconcile_account ties an account to its statement and saves the proof. set_lock_date freezes a closed period.
  • Reports: profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, cash flow, Schedule C and a 1099 vendor report.
  • Memory: book rules and open questions live in the ledger, so the next AI session follows them.

Growth and Scale add AI Bookkeeping and Autopilot, which write to the same ledger and audit log. The About page says LedgerMCP is not payroll, inventory or multi-currency software.

Who it's for

The home page pitches LedgerMCP to people who want their AI to keep the books: "Hand your AI a bank statement and it imports, categorizes, and reconciles."

  • Small business owners and freelancers who are behind on bookkeeping and already use Claude or ChatGPT.
  • Bookkeepers and CPA practices. The page for CPAs offers unlimited client books on one account with one key. Firms can invite staff and give clients a review-only view.
  • Owners with several entities or personal books, since one account holds unlimited books.

Pricing

LedgerMCP's pricing page says "The software is free. Bank feeds are the upgrade."

PlanPriceWhat it adds
Free$0Unlimited books, all reports, CSV and manual imports, your own AI over MCP; bank feeds free for 14 days, up to 5 accounts
Starter$9/moLive bank feeds for up to 10 connected accounts
Growth$39/moUp to 20 connected accounts, plus AI Bookkeeping and Autopilot
Scale$249/moUp to 100 connected accounts, for firms and multi-book practices

Billing is monthly. Connected accounts count across all your books; offline CSV accounts never count.

Security and trust: how LedgerMCP keeps AI bookkeeping safe

LedgerMCP's security page says its rules are "constraints in Postgres, not app code a bug can skip." It describes:

  • Immutable postings. There is "no edit and no delete, for anyone, including us." A mistake is fixed with reverse_entry, a linked mirror entry.
  • Balanced or rejected. Debits must equal credits to the cent, or the write is rejected.
  • Audit log. list_audit_log records each agent write: actor, tool, arguments and resulting entry. The owner can reverse any write in one click.
  • Read-only keys. These run every list and report, but writes are "rejected at the server." Keys are SHA-256 hashed and revocable.
  • Lock dates. Nothing posts into a locked period. The docs tell the AI that moving or clearing a lock is "THE OWNER'S DECISION, NOT YOURS."
  • verify_books. This check re-derives every ledger rule from the raw rows. The docs call it "necessary, not sufficient"; reconciling to a statement proves a period.
  • Previews and safe retries. dry_run previews the exact lines, and a repeated request is recorded only once.
  • Human-only deletes. Per llms.txt, deleting transactions, tags, accounts and receipts happens only in the web app.
  • Your data. Plaid handles bank logins, books stay on US servers, and LedgerMCP says it never trains AI models on your books.

LedgerMCP sums it up: "The worst a confused AI can do is post a balanced, logged change you can reverse in one click." A balanced entry can still be the wrong entry, so a person should review the books.

How to connect it

Every AI uses https://ledgermcp.com/mcp over streamable HTTP. The preferred route is OAuth sign-in with a 6-digit email code:

  • Claude: add https://ledgermcp.com/mcp as a custom connector and sign in.
  • ChatGPT: add the URL as a custom MCP server. OpenAI's current guide puts this under ChatGPT Plugins; LedgerMCP's docs still describe Developer mode.
  • Grok: at grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom.

Claude Code, Cursor and other clients can send a key from Settings, Your AI, as Authorization: Bearer lmcp_.... Our LedgerMCP MCP server profile has the full config and tool list.

Next step

Start a free test book, import one statement and read the audit log. The Claude connection guide walks through it.

Frequently asked questions

Is LedgerMCP free?

Yes. The pricing page says the software is free forever, including your own AI over MCP. Paid plans from $9 a month add live bank feeds.

Can an AI break my books in LedgerMCP?

Not silently, according to LedgerMCP. Unbalanced entries are rejected, postings can't be edited, and every AI write is logged and reversible. A balanced but wrong entry is still possible, so review the books.

Can I let an AI read my books without changing them?

Yes. Create a read-only key in Settings, Your AI. It can run every list and report but never write.

Who built LedgerMCP?

eSEOspace built LedgerMCP. It is published by LedgerMCP, LLC, which says it is based in Florida, United States, and keeps books on US servers.
