Best MCP Servers for WordPress in 2026: 9 Options Compared

This list is part of our best-of MCP lists, within The MCP Guide. Entries are checked against each vendor's own pages; inclusion is editorial and not paid.

The best MCP server for WordPress depends on where your site lives. Self-hosted sites should start with the official WordPress MCP Adapter or a plugin built on it. Sites on WordPress.com, or connected through Jetpack, can use WordPress.com's own hosted MCP server at no extra cost.

An MCP server lets an AI app such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor work on your site directly. It can draft posts, update SEO fields or check plugins without you copying text back and forth. That is useful, but it also means an AI can change a live website, so the access model matters more than the tool count.

We checked each option below against its official docs, plugin listing or pricing page on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test these products for this list.

Key Takeaways

  • The official route is the WordPress MCP Adapter, which turns registered "abilities" into MCP tools and keeps them private by default.
  • Automattic's older wordpress-mcp plugin was archived on 17 September 2026, so new projects should not start there.
  • WordPress.com's hosted MCP server works on every WordPress.com plan, free sites included, and on self-hosted sites connected with Jetpack.
  • Plugins such as AI Engine, Royal MCP, Easy MCP AI and WPVibe add ready-made tools, but each one gives an AI broad control of your site.
  • Look for drafts-by-default, read-only modes, scopes and undo before you connect an AI to a production site.

How we chose

We included an option only if it passed these tests:

  1. Real and live. We could open its official docs, GitHub repo or WordPress.org listing on 28 October 2026.
  2. Works with WordPress sites. It reads or changes WordPress content, settings or stores. Tools that only submit plugins to the WordPress.org directory were left out.
  3. Clear access model. The docs explain how the AI signs in (OAuth, Application Passwords, tokens) and what it can reach.
  4. Clear cost. Pricing comes from the vendor's own pricing page or listing, or the project is free and open source.

We dropped archived projects and community servers we could not trace to a maintained source. We did not rank by popularity. The order below runs from official building blocks to hosted services and then plugins.

1. WordPress MCP Adapter: the official building block

What it is. The WordPress MCP Adapter is "the official WordPress package for MCP integration," part of the AI Building Blocks for WordPress initiative. It converts abilities registered through the WordPress Abilities API into MCP tools, resources and prompts. It supports STDIO (through WP-CLI) and HTTP transports.

The README says "WordPress abilities are private by default." A developer must set meta.public to true before an AI can reach an ability. For remote sites, Automattic's mcp-wordpress-remote proxy connects clients to the adapter, with OAuth 2.1 recommended and Application Passwords as a legacy option.

Best for: Developers and agencies who want to decide exactly what an AI can do on a site.

Pricing: Free and open source under GPL-2.0-or-later.

Pros:

  • Official, and the base that WooCommerce and several plugins now build on.
  • Nothing is exposed until a developer opts an ability in.
  • Per-ability permission checks run as a real WordPress user.

Cons:

  • It ships no content tools of its own; what the AI can do depends on registered abilities.
  • Still pre-1.0, with migration guides for several releases, so upgrades need testing.

Checked against: WordPress MCP Adapter on GitHub on 28 October 2026. Full profile: WordPress MCP Adapter.

2. WordPress.com MCP: hosted server for WordPress.com and Jetpack sites

What it is. WordPress.com MCP is one remote server at https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1 that covers every site on your account. It signs in with OAuth 2.1 and PKCE, so no secrets sit in a config file. Self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack can use it too.

The tools reference covers content, site settings, users, plugins, themes, domains and more. Write operations "are never auto-executed": the agent must describe the change and get your approval first. New posts are drafts by default.

Best for: Sites hosted on WordPress.com, and self-hosted owners who already run Jetpack.

Pricing: WordPress.com's docs say it is included "on every plan, free sites included." The docs say Jetpack-connected sites can use it without a Jetpack plan. Some tools, such as plugin installs, need a plan that allows plugins.

Pros:

  • Nothing to install or host; documented setup for Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and VS Code.
  • "Read only" access turns off every write tool.
  • One connection covers all the sites on your account.

Cons:

  • Some deletes are permanent: media, categories and tags have no trash.
  • Tools such as DNS and nameserver changes affect live infrastructure, so access needs care.

Checked against: WordPress.com MCP docs on 28 October 2026.

3. WooCommerce MCP: store abilities through the adapter

What it is. WooCommerce MCP exposes store abilities for products and orders through the WordPress MCP Adapter. WooCommerce registers its abilities automatically, but "WooCommerce does not bundle the MCP adapter," so you install the adapter plugin yourself.

The docs say the feature is "currently in developer preview." The old /wp-json/woocommerce/mcp endpoint was removed in WooCommerce 11.3. Remote clients connect with a WordPress username and an Application Password.

Best for: WooCommerce stores that want AI help with product edits and order lookups.

Pricing: Free. WooCommerce and the MCP Adapter are both free plugins.

Pros:

  • Official abilities for product create, update and delete, plus order queries and notes.
  • Each ability runs its own permission check.
  • Docs recommend a dedicated low-privilege user.

Cons:

  • Developer preview, so APIs "may change."
  • Order and customer data is personal data, which raises privacy duties.

Checked against: WooCommerce MCP documentation on 28 October 2026. Full profile: WooCommerce MCP server.

4. AI Engine (Meow Apps): all-round plugin with a free MCP server

What it is. AI Engine is a WordPress AI plugin that turns your site into an MCP server. The listing says it has "more than 130 tools, over 200 with the Meow Apps family," covering posts, pages, media, users and taxonomies. Desktop clients connect with OAuth: you paste the MCP URL, sign in to WordPress and approve.

Each person connects with their own WordPress account, so actions are logged under their name. The listing says AI Engine's MCP tools "do not run arbitrary code."

Best for: Site owners who want one plugin for content work with Claude or ChatGPT.

Pricing: The listing says "the MCP server is free, with no monthly fee and no usage cap." AI Engine Pro adds plugins, themes, database and WooCommerce tools from $59/year for one site, $79/year for five sites or $149/year for 20 sites.

Pros:

  • Free MCP server with OAuth sign-in and per-user logging.
  • Tool sets can be switched on or off per need.
  • Editors can be given access limited to content they can already edit.

Cons:

  • Database, theme and plugin tools sit behind Pro.
  • A large plugin with many features beyond MCP, which adds surface area.

Checked against: AI Engine on WordPress.org and AI Engine Pro pricing on 28 October 2026.

5. Royal MCP: self-hosted plugin with undo and dry runs

What it is. Royal MCP by Royal Plugins is a "100% self-hosted" plugin that lets Claude, ChatGPT and other apps work on your site. It supports OAuth 2.0 with PKCE and dynamic client registration, or an API key sent as a bearer header for clients without OAuth.

The listing says destructive writes can be undone within 72 hours, new posts start as drafts, and option and permalink writes support a dry-run preview. It also says "Royal MCP makes no outbound calls of its own."

Best for: Self-hosted sites that want safety nets such as undo and drafts by default.

Pricing: The core plugin is free on WordPress.org. Royal Plugins sells a Pro version with more tools, a 90-day audit log and per-connection tool profiles, but the Pro page did not show prices when we checked.

Pros:

  • Undo window and dry-run previews reduce the cost of a bad AI action.
  • Credentials and audit logs stay in your own WordPress database.
  • Integration tools load for WooCommerce, Elementor, Yoast SEO and ACF when those plugins are active.

Cons:

  • The listing gives different tool counts in different sections, so check the live count.
  • Pro pricing was not published on the page we opened.

Checked against: Royal MCP on WordPress.org and Royal MCP product page on 28 October 2026.

6. Easy MCP AI (Themeisle): free plugin with SEO tools

What it is. Easy MCP AI from Themeisle "turns your own site into a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server." It runs inside WordPress, so clients connect to your site directly with no hosted relay. It signs in with OAuth 2.1, PKCE and dynamic client registration, with hashed API tokens for config-file clients.

The listing claims "280+ MCP tools," including more than 50 for SEO and analytics. It also works as a WordPress MCP adapter for the Abilities API on WordPress 6.9 and later.

Best for: Marketing and SEO teams that want keyword and analytics tools next to content tools.

Pricing: Free. The FAQ says it "includes all 280+ tools." Any Google, Semrush, SE Ranking, DataForSEO or Ahrefs charges come from your own accounts with those providers.

Pros:

  • Free with no paid tier holding back tools.
  • Each tool call runs as a WordPress user with that user's capability checks.
  • Can expose Abilities API abilities without custom adapter code.

Cons:

  • A very large tool list can confuse an AI and widen access; trim it if you can.
  • Newer plugin, so there is less track record than the official adapter.

Checked against: Easy MCP AI on WordPress.org on 28 October 2026.

7. WPVibe (SeedProd): hosted relay with a free daily allowance

What it is. WPVibe is SeedProd's "Model Context Protocol server for WordPress." You add https://mcp.wpvibe.ai/mcp in your AI client, then approve the connection in wp-admin through a one-click link. The plugin "connects to the WPVibe service at wpvibe.ai to relay requests between your AI assistant and your WordPress site."

The listing says it uses WordPress Application Passwords, stores credentials encrypted with AES-256-GCM on WPVibe's servers, and keeps content on your WordPress server.

Best for: Owners who want the fastest setup across Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor.

Pricing: The WPVibe pricing page lists Free ($0, 100 tool calls a day), Pro ($99/year, 500), Power ($299/year, 2,000), Agency ($599/year, 5,000) and Scale ($899/year, 10,000). Connected sites are unlimited on every plan.

Pros:

  • One-click authorization, so no passwords are typed into a chat.
  • Full REST API reach, including custom post types.
  • Clear daily limits on each plan.

Cons:

  • Every tool call passes through a third-party service, which some security reviews will not allow.
  • Broad REST API reach means the AI can do almost anything the connected user can.

Checked against: WPVibe on WordPress.org and WPVibe pricing on 28 October 2026.

8. InstaWP InstaMCP: built into InstaWP hosting

What it is. InstaMCP is InstaWP's built-in MCP server for sites hosted on InstaWP. Turning on MCP installs the plugin and gives you a connection URL to paste into Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. InstaWP says it exposes 43 typed tools across content, blocks, plugins, themes and media.

Access uses four scopes: mcp:read, mcp:write, mcp:delete and mcp:admin. Risky tools such as execute_php and db_query are off until an admin enables them.

Best for: Agencies that already build or stage client sites on InstaWP.

Pricing: InstaWP's pricing page says WordPress MCP is included on every tier, from Sandbox ($2/month per site) through Starter ($5), Plus ($9), Pro ($15), Turbo ($25) and Elite ($45).

Pros:

  • Scopes let a read-only connection stay read-only "whatever the prompt says."
  • Dangerous tools are off by default.
  • Account-level MCP can cover every site in a team.

Cons:

  • The access token sits in the URL; InstaWP warns to "treat this URL as a credential."
  • Only for sites hosted on InstaWP.

Checked against: InstaMCP page and InstaWP pricing on 28 October 2026.

9. Hostinger AI Plugin: MCP on Hostinger WordPress hosting

What it is. Hostinger's support guide says the Hostinger AI Plugin, which also runs its Kodee assistant, lets Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Cursor connect to your site. The endpoint is /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server, the same path the official adapter uses.

You sign in with a WordPress Application Password, one per tool so each can be revoked. Hostinger lists posts, pages, media, users, plugins, themes and settings as areas the AI can manage.

Best for: Sites already on Hostinger Business or Cloud plans.

Pricing: Included with an eligible plan. Hostinger's WordPress hosting page listed Cloud Startup at $7.99/month on a 48-month term (renewing at $25.99/month) when we checked. That page did not show a plan named "Business," so confirm eligibility with Hostinger.

Pros:

  • Pre-installed on new Business and Cloud sites.
  • Uses the standard adapter endpoint rather than a custom protocol.
  • Credentials stay on your computer, per the guide.

Cons:

  • Only three clients are documented in the guide.
  • The documented scope is broad, including users and plugins.

Checked against: Hostinger's MCP support guide on 28 October 2026.

What we left out

  • Automattic's wordpress-mcp plugin. Its repo says it "is deprecated and archived" and was archived on 17 September 2026. It points users to the MCP Adapter.
  • Unofficial page-builder and host servers. We found community Elementor and WP Engine servers in directories, but no official MCP server from either company. See our guide to MCP directories and supply chain risks before installing one.

How to choose

  • You run WordPress.com or Jetpack: start with WordPress.com MCP and its read-only mode.
  • You want full control on a self-hosted site: use the MCP Adapter and expose only the abilities you write.
  • You want ready-made tools today: pick a plugin, then connect it as a low-privilege user, not an admin.
  • You run a store: add WooCommerce's abilities, and keep refunds and customer data out of reach at first.

Whatever you pick, test on a staging copy, keep posts as drafts until a person reviews them, and read our guide to MCP excessive permissions. For other site platforms, see our list of MCP servers for website teams and the full best-of collection.

Next step

If you want AI agents to edit your WordPress site safely, the hard part is deciding which abilities to expose and who they run as. Our MCP development team designs custom abilities and permission models, and our WordPress plugin development team can build them into your site.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official WordPress MCP server?

Yes. The WordPress MCP Adapter is the official package in the WordPress GitHub organization. WordPress.com also runs its own hosted MCP server for WordPress.com sites and Jetpack-connected sites.

Can I still use Automattic's wordpress-mcp plugin?

Its repository was archived on 17 September 2026 and is read-only. The repo points to the MCP Adapter as the replacement, so new setups should use the adapter or a plugin built on it.

Which option is safest for a live business site?

The safest setups start read-only, run as a low-privilege WordPress user and keep new posts as drafts. WordPress.com MCP requires approval for every write, and the MCP Adapter exposes nothing until you opt abilities in.

Do I need WordPress 6.9?

Options built on the Abilities API need it. Easy MCP AI's listing, for example, says Abilities API features require WordPress 6.9 or later. Older sites can still use plugins that call the REST API directly.

Do these plugins cost money?

Several are free, including the MCP Adapter, Easy MCP AI and AI Engine's MCP server. Paid tiers add tools or higher limits, such as AI Engine Pro from $59/year and WPVibe Pro at $99/year. You still pay for your AI app separately.
