Chargebee MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

Chargebee runs hosted MCP servers that let an AI app answer billing questions from Chargebee's docs and look up customer, subscription, invoice and payment data from your Chargebee site. Chargebee publishes them inside its Billing product, and you switch each one on in your site settings.

What it can do

Chargebee describes the four servers like this:

• Knowledge Base MCP Server: answers questions using Chargebee docs and API references. Its Product Knowledge toolset includes "Generate Code Snippet" and "Explain Chargebee Docs."
• Data Lookup MCP Server: retrieves customer, subscription, invoice, quote and payment data from your site.
• Onboarding MCP Server: creates product catalogs and generates demo data for test and sandbox sites.
• Custom MCP Server: combines existing Chargebee tools into a server for your use case.

The Data Lookup page lists 23 toolsets. They include Subscription Lookup, Customer Lookup, Product Lookup, Invoice Lookup (with invoice PDF links), Quote Lookup, Credit Note Lookup, Transaction Lookup, Payment Intent Lookup, Revenue Lookup (MRR history), Order Lookup and Export Data. Export Data creates export jobs, so even this "lookup" server can start actions.

How to connect it

1. Turn it on. In Chargebee Billing, go to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Agentic AI > MCP Servers. Select a server and turn on the MCP Access toggle on the Access & Authentication tab.

2. Use the right regional URL. For Data Lookup:

• US: https://YOUR-CHARGEBEE-SUBDOMAIN.mcp.chargebee.com/data_lookup_agent
• EU: https://YOUR-CHARGEBEE-SUBDOMAIN.mcp.eu.chargebee.com/data_lookup_agent
• AU: https://YOUR-CHARGEBEE-SUBDOMAIN.mcp.au.chargebee.com/data_lookup_agent

The Knowledge Base server uses the same pattern ending in /knowledge_base_agent.

3. Add it to your client. Chargebee's Knowledge Base page gives this Claude Code command:

Chargebee also links ChatGPT connectors for the US, EU and Australia, and a Claude connector.

For Data Lookup with an API key, send Authorization: Bearer YOUR-API-KEY. Chargebee allows up to five keys per server.

Security notes

• API key vs OAuth. An API key grants access to all enabled tools. OAuth limits tools to the signed-in user's Chargebee access level. Use OAuth for people and keys for server-to-server jobs.
• Multi-entity sites. Chargebee says OAuth is not supported on sites with Multi-Business Entity enabled. Use API keys there, and scope toolsets tightly.
• Tool input rules. You can hide fields from the agent, set default values and add constraints such as min and max values. This is a useful guardrail.
• Client-side approvals. Chargebee says approval behavior depends on the client. Connect only trusted clients and review actions before they run.
• Hygiene. Chargebee advises enabling only the servers and toolsets you need and rotating keys and OAuth credentials periodically.
• What the spec says. The MCP tools specification says there SHOULD always be a human in the loop who can deny tool calls. The spec's security best practices also recommend scope minimization.
