Plaid MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

This profile is part of our MCP server directory, within The MCP Guide. Profiles are checked against each vendor's own documentation. Need a server built? See MCP development.

Plaid's Dashboard MCP server lets an AI app diagnose and analyze your Plaid integration. It can debug a linked bank connection, pull Link conversion metrics and show your API usage. Plaid hosts it, and it works with Production data only.

Checked against: Plaid's MCP documentation on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test this server.

Key Takeaways

  • The Dashboard MCP server lives at https://api.dashboard.plaid.com/mcp/ and uses streamable HTTP.
  • It is for developers and ops teams running a Plaid integration, not for moving money.
  • Plaid lists five tools, all focused on diagnostics, analytics and usage.
  • You need approved Production access with at least one Plaid product, and access tokens expire after 15 minutes.
  • Plaid says the server "is under active development," breaking changes may occur, and support is limited.

What it can do

Plaid lists these tools for the Dashboard MCP server:

ToolPurpose
plaid_debug_itemDiagnose a Plaid Item using related metadata
plaid_get_link_analyticsGet Link funnel, conversion and error metrics
plaid_get_tools_introductionGet usage guidance for the Dashboard tools
plaid_get_usagesGet product usage metrics and API request volumes
plaid_list_teamsList teams available to the OAuth token

Plaid does not label these tools as read-only, but their descriptions are all about retrieval and diagnosis.

Plaid also has a separate local server in its AI coding toolkit. Plaid says it offers mock data generation, documentation search, Sandbox tokens and webhook simulation. The MCP page does not give its setup details.

How to connect it

In an MCP client. Add https://api.dashboard.plaid.com/mcp/ in the client's MCP settings and choose Streamable HTTP if asked. Plaid names Claude.ai and ChatGPT as examples of clients that accept remote server URLs.

From code. First get an OAuth token by posting your client_id, client_secret, grant_type and scope to https://production.plaid.com/oauth/token, with grant_type set to client_credentials and scope set to mcp:dashboard. The response includes an access_token and a refresh_token.

Then pass the token to your model provider's remote MCP feature. Plaid says OpenAI's Responses API takes it in the authorization field of an mcp tool. Anthropic's Messages API takes it as authorization_token in the MCP connector. Plaid's sample code uses the environment variables PLAID_CLIENT_ID and PLAID_PRODUCTION_SECRET.

To refresh, post the refresh_token to the same URL with grant_type set to refresh_token.

Security notes

  • Production data only. There is no sandbox for the Dashboard server, so every call touches real integration data.
  • Short-lived tokens. Plaid says access tokens expire after 15 minutes. Expired tokens return 401 errors.
  • Keep secrets out of code. Plaid's examples read credentials from environment variables. Never paste a client_secret into a chat or a shared config. See secrets and credential leakage in MCP.
  • Approval settings. Plaid's Python sample sets require_approval: "never". That is convenient for read-only diagnostics. Do not copy that setting to servers that can write.
  • Breaking changes. Plaid warns that the server may change and support is limited. Do not build critical alerts on it yet.
  • What the spec says. The MCP tools specification says there SHOULD always be a human in the loop who can deny tool calls. The spec's security best practices also recommend scope minimization.

Alternatives

Next step

Plaid's server is a support and ops tool. If you want an agent that also uses bank data in your own product, that is a custom build. Talk to our MCP development team, or see MCP for accounting for how bank feeds fit into bookkeeping agents.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Plaid MCP server move money?

No tool on Plaid's list moves money. The five Dashboard tools cover Item debugging, Link analytics, usage metrics, team lists and usage guidance.

Can I use it with Sandbox data?

Plaid says the Dashboard MCP server works with Production data only. For Sandbox work, the local server in Plaid's AI coding toolkit offers Sandbox tokens and mock data.

Why does my connection keep failing with 401 errors?

Plaid's access tokens for the server expire after 15 minutes. Request a new token or use the refresh token.

Is it stable?

Plaid says it is under active development, breaking changes may occur, and support is limited.
