ClickUp MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

This profile is part of our MCP server directory, within The MCP Guide. Profiles are checked against each vendor's own documentation. Need a server built? See MCP development.

The ClickUp MCP server lets an AI app create and update tasks, track time, write docs, post chat messages and search your workspace. ClickUp publishes and hosts it at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp. ClickUp says it is available on all plans, with a daily call limit that depends on your plan.

Checked against: ClickUp's MCP server docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test this server.

Key Takeaways

  • Sign-in is OAuth only. ClickUp says you cannot use your own API keys or access tokens.
  • Daily limits run from 100 calls on Free Forever to 25,000 on Enterprise Plus, per workspace and per client.
  • The tools page lists two delete tools: clickup_delete_task and clickup_delete_comment.
  • ClickUp gives copy-ready setup for Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, ChatGPT and several other clients.
  • ClickUp notes that future restrictions may apply to MCP features.

What it can do

ClickUp's supported tools page prefixes every tool with clickup_. The groups are:

  • Tasks: clickup_create_task, clickup_update_task, clickup_get_task, clickup_filter_tasks, clickup_move_task, clickup_merge_tasks and clickup_delete_task.
  • Relationships and tags: dependency, link and tag tools, plus clickup_get_custom_fields.
  • Time tracking: clickup_start_time_tracking, clickup_stop_time_tracking, clickup_add_time_entry and clickup_get_time_entries.
  • Comments: clickup_create_task_comment, clickup_get_task_comments, clickup_update_comment and clickup_delete_comment.
  • Docs: clickup_create_document, clickup_create_document_page, clickup_update_document_page and page readers.
  • Chat: clickup_send_chat_message, clickup_get_chat_channels and clickup_get_chat_channel_messages.
  • Lists, folders and reminders: create and update tools for lists, folders and reminders.
  • Workspace and search: clickup_get_workspace_hierarchy, clickup_get_workspace_members, clickup_find_member_by_name and clickup_search.
  • Generic operations: clickup_execute_operator, clickup_get_operators and clickup_get_schema.

ClickUp's main MCP page says, "For the time being, we haven't added any deletion tools as a safety measure." The tools page does list two delete tools, so check the current list yourself.

How to connect it

ClickUp's setup page covers many clients. For Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http clickup https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp

Then run /mcp in a session to sign in. For Cursor, add this to mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "clickup": {
      "url": "https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

For VS Code, ClickUp gives this terminal command:

code --add-mcp '{"type":"http","name":"clickup","url":"https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp"}'

On Claude Pro, Team or Enterprise, ClickUp says to add a custom connector with the remote URL. Claude Free users edit claude_desktop_config.json to run npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp. In ChatGPT, you search Apps for ClickUp and connect it. ClickUp also documents Devin, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop) and Antigravity.

Security notes

OAuth-only sign-in is a good default. It avoids long-lived personal tokens sitting in config files.

  • Delete tools. clickup_delete_task and clickup_delete_comment are destructive. Keep approval on, and read our page on MCP tool annotations to see how clients flag risky tools.
  • Chat messages. clickup_send_chat_message posts as you. A confused or manipulated agent could message your team.
  • Bulk operations. clickup_execute_operator runs operations at scale. ClickUp says it cannot delete anything.
  • Rate limits. Over the limit, calls return RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED with a retryAfter value. Limits cannot be reset. Our page on resource exhaustion covers runaway loops.
  • ChatGPT admins. In ChatGPT Team, Enterprise and Edu, only owners and admins can configure MCP servers, per ClickUp.

Alternatives

Next step

ClickUp's limits make cost predictable, but a busy agent can still hit them. Pick the plan that matches your expected call volume, and decide whether delete tools need approval. eSEOspace can help in an MCP readiness audit. Compare more servers in the MCP server directory.

Frequently asked questions

How many ClickUp MCP calls do I get?

Without the Everything AI add-on, ClickUp lists 100 calls per rolling 24 hours on Free Forever, 300 on Core and Unlimited, 1,000 on Business, 2,500 on Business Plus, 5,000 on Enterprise and 25,000 on Enterprise Plus. With the add-on, MCP limits match the public API limits.

Can I use a ClickUp API key with the MCP server?

No. ClickUp says it only supports OAuth and that you cannot use your own API keys or access tokens. Custom clients must support OAuth 2.1 with PKCE.

Does the ClickUp MCP server use AI credits?

ClickUp says MCP does not use AI Super Credits. Each tool call counts as one call toward your daily limit; initialize and tools/list do not count.

Can the ClickUp MCP server delete tasks?

The tools page lists clickup_delete_task and clickup_delete_comment. ClickUp's overview page says it has not added deletion tools, so the two pages disagree. Check the live tool list before rollout.
