Resolving Ecommerce Order Issues with MCP: A Step-by-Step Playbook

This playbook is part of our MCP playbooks, within The MCP Guide. Want help setting it up for your team? Request a free MCP readiness review.

"Where is my order?" and "Why was I charged twice?" are the questions that eat an ecommerce team's day. Answering them means opening the store admin, then the payment dashboard, then the help desk, and stitching the story together. In a small store that falls to the owner or one support person.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI app read the order in Shopify and the payment in Stripe from one chat. It can lay out what happened and draft the answer. Refunds and order changes stay with a person, and both vendors' docs build in limits that help.

This playbook uses Shopify's official AI connectors and Stripe's hosted MCP server. Tool names come from vendor pages checked on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test these products. More workflows are in our MCP playbooks hub.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify's official Claude connector lists list-orders, get-order and list-customers, so an AI can read order details without a custom integration.
  • Shopify says its ChatGPT plugin reads orders but can't issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, or mark orders as paid.
  • Stripe's server reaches charges, refunds, PaymentIntents and disputes through stripe_api_read and stripe_api_write.
  • Stripe requires a person to confirm certain writes, such as refunds, through a link before they run.
  • Stripe will stop accepting full-access secret keys, and restricted keys without the Agent tag, over MCP in December 2026, so use OAuth or an agent API key.

Shopify has several MCP servers for different jobs. For managing your own store, it documents official connectors for AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Shopify's public endpoint at https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcp serves shopping agents under the Universal Commerce Protocol, not store admin work. Our guide to connecting ChatGPT to Shopify covers the install and approval steps.

Stripe hosts its server at https://mcp.stripe.com, per its MCP documentation. Stripe documents setup for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and Codex.

If Stripe processes some or all of your payments, connect both. If you use Shopify Payments only, the Shopify connector covers most of the lookup.

The workflow

  1. Find the order. Search by order number, email or customer name. Shopify's Claude connector page lists list-orders and list-customers. Shopify's ChatGPT plugin guide says it lists recent orders with customer, totals, and payment and fulfillment status, up to 50 at a time.
  2. Open the order. get-order shows line items, fulfillment status, shipping address and tracking, per Shopify's plugin guide. This answers most "where is my order?" questions.
  3. Check the customer's history. Shopify's plugin can show a customer's order count and total spend. That helps spot a duplicate order versus a duplicate charge.
  4. Match the payment in Stripe. The AI uses stripe_api_read with Stripe methods such as "List all charges," "Retrieve a PaymentIntent" and "List all refunds for a charge." Stripe lists these among its supported API methods.
  5. Look for disputes. "List all disputes" and "Retrieve a dispute" show whether the customer already filed a chargeback. Don't refund a charge that is under dispute without checking your process.
  6. Write up the case. Ask for a short timeline: order placed, payment captured, fulfillment, tracking, refunds, disputes. Paste it into your help desk as an internal note.
  7. Draft the customer reply. The AI drafts; a person sends. If you run support through a help desk with its own MCP server, see our support ticket triage playbook.
  8. Refund only with confirmation. If a refund is due, the AI can prepare "Create refund" through stripe_api_write. Stripe says it requires human confirmation for certain writes, such as refunds and outbound payments. You click the link, review the request and approve. Stripe says the approval expires after 24 hours, and you then tell the agent to retry.

Order edits and cancellations happen in your Shopify admin. Shopify's ChatGPT plugin guide says the plugin "reads your orders but doesn't change them."

Example prompts

  • "Find Shopify orders for jane@example.com in the last 60 days. For the most recent, show fulfillment status and tracking."
  • "Order 1042 says paid but the customer reports two charges. List Stripe charges for this customer's email in the last week and compare amounts and times."
  • "Check whether any Stripe dispute exists for the charge on order 1042. Summarize its status."
  • "Write a timeline for order 1042 from Shopify and Stripe data, then draft a short, friendly reply. Don't send anything."
  • "Prepare a refund for the duplicate charge only. Stop and give me the confirmation link."

Guardrails

Start read-only. Shopify lets you approve read-only access, which lets the tool "view data but not change it," per its authorization guide. You can't lower an approved level later without uninstalling and reinstalling.

Use the narrowest identity. Shopify caps a tool's access at the permissions of the staff user who connects it. For Stripe, the docs say to create an agent API key "with only the permissions the client needs" for unattended use. Stripe says that starting in December 2026 its MCP server will stop accepting full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the Agent tag.

Keep tool approval on. Stripe's docs say to turn on your client's tool-approval setting and to "exercise caution when using the Stripe MCP with other servers to avoid prompt injection attacks." A customer email is untrusted text. Read more in the MCP Security Center.

Use admin controls. Stripe admins can enable or disable MCP access for the whole team, separately for live mode and sandboxes, and revoke OAuth sessions in the Dashboard.

Keep these human: refunds, cancellations, chargeback responses, address changes after fulfillment and anything involving fraud.

What to measure

  • Time from a customer's order question to the first useful answer.
  • How often the AI's timeline matched what a person found in the admin.
  • Refund requests the AI prepared versus those a person approved.
  • Repeat contacts on the same order.
  • Stripe MCP tool call activity, which Stripe says you can view in Workbench logs.

Frequently asked questions

Can the AI refund a customer on its own?

Not through Shopify's ChatGPT plugin, which Shopify says can't issue refunds. Through Stripe, a refund is a write that Stripe says needs human confirmation via a link before it runs. Keep it that way.

Do I need Stripe if I use Shopify Payments?

Not for basic order lookups. Shopify's connector shows payment and fulfillment status. Stripe's server matters when Stripe processes some or all of your payments.

Can I use Shopify's /api/mcp endpoint for this?

No. Shopify removed the old catalog and cart tools at /api/mcp. They now live at /api/ucp/mcp under the Universal Commerce Protocol, which serves shopping agents rather than store admin.

What happens to my existing Stripe API key setup?

Stripe says to migrate by 30 November 2026. From December, full-access secret keys and restricted keys without the Agent tag get a 401 response. Switch to OAuth or a new agent API key.
