MCP Config Generator. The exact setup for your AI app.

Pick your AI app and describe the server. Get the config file entry or command in the format each app's own docs use, as of 28 October 2026.

Generate your MCP config

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type, including tokens, is sent anywhere.

Where does the server run?
How does it sign you in?

Claude Code (claude mcp add)

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://example.com/mcp
  • OAuth needs nothing in the config. Inside Claude Code, run /mcp and follow the sign-in steps in your browser.
  • Check it with: claude mcp list (or /mcp inside Claude Code).
  • Scopes: local (default, just you in this project), project (shared through .mcp.json), user (you, in every project).

Format from Claude Code docs: Connect Claude Code to tools via MCP, checked 28 October 2026. Apps change these formats; if it fails, compare with the linked page.

Formats checked on 28 October 2026 against the docs for Claude Desktop, Claude custom connectors, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Windsurf / Devin Desktop.

How to use it

How to use the MCP Config Generator

Choose the AI app you use, then give the server a short name. Pick Remote if the vendor gave you a URL, or Local if their docs tell you to run a command such as npx or uvx.

For a remote server, choose how it signs you in. Most official servers use OAuth, which needs nothing in the config: the app asks you to sign in. If the vendor gave you an API key, choose bearer token. For a local server, put each argument on its own line and add any environment variables the server's docs list.

Copy the result into the file shown, or run the command, then restart or reload the app. Tick "Keep secrets out of the file" when the file will be shared or committed to a code repository.

Limits

What it can't tell you

It formats a server you already chose. It can't tell you whether that server is safe, whether its URL or package name is right, or which arguments it needs. Take those from the vendor's own docs, and run the server through our MCP server risk checklist.

Apps change their formats. We follow each app's docs as opened on 28 October 2026 and link them under every result. VS Code now has two file formats, and Windsurf's MCP docs moved to Devin Desktop, so check the linked page if a server doesn't load.

FAQ

Common questions

Where is the Claude Desktop config file?
On macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json, and on Windows %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. Open it from Claude Desktop with Settings > Developer > Edit Config, then quit and reopen the app after saving.
Can I add a remote MCP server to the Claude Desktop config file?
Anthropic's docs add remote servers as custom connectors in the app instead: Customize > Connectors > Add custom connector, then paste the URL. The config file is for local servers that Claude Desktop starts itself.
What is the difference between mcpServers and servers?
Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf use a top-level mcpServers object. VS Code's own .vscode/mcp.json format uses servers, with a type on each server. VS Code's newer portable files use mcpServers.
Is it safe to put API keys in these files?
The files store values as plain text. Use OAuth where the server offers it, keep keys out of files you commit, and use the app's variable references where it supports them, such as ${VAR} in Claude Code or ${env:VAR} in Cursor.
Does this tool send my token anywhere?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser and makes no network requests. Close the tab and what you typed is gone.
