Meta Ads MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

This profile is part of our MCP server directory, within The MCP Guide. Profiles are checked against each vendor's own documentation. Need a server built? See MCP development.

The Meta ads MCP server lets an AI app report on and manage your Facebook and Instagram ads. Meta describes it as "a Meta-hosted Model Context Protocol server," and it can create and edit ads, ad sets and campaigns. You sign in with your Facebook account through Facebook Login for Business.

Checked against: Meta ads MCP server overview on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test this server.

Because this server can change live ads, read MCP excessive permissions before you connect it.

Key Takeaways

  • Meta hosts the server at https://mcp.facebook.com/ads and says it "works with any MCP-compatible AI agent."
  • It can create and edit ads, ad sets and campaigns, plus catalogs, A/B tests and conversion lift studies.
  • You do not need your own Meta developer app; Meta says owning one "is not a prerequisite."
  • Tokens need at least ads_mcp_management plus ads_read or ads_management.
  • Only Employee-role system user tokens work; Admin-role system user tokens are rejected.

What it can do

Meta's overview lists seven tool categories rather than individual tool names:

  • Comprehensive reporting
  • Ad creation and management
  • Catalog creation and management
  • Signals and datasets
  • Help and troubleshooting
  • A/B tests and conversion lift studies
  • Activity logs

The overview says the server can "create and edit ads, ad sets, and campaigns." Which tools you see depends on the permissions your token carries. Optional permissions such as catalog_management, business_management, pages_show_list and instagram_basic unlock more tools, per the get-started guide.

How to connect it

Meta documents three sign-in methods:

  1. OAuth. Sign in through the Facebook Login for Business dialog. Meta says "No manual token setup is required."
  2. User access token. Generate one in the Graph API Explorer or your own OAuth flow.
  3. System user access token. For server-to-server setups. Only Employee-role tokens are supported.

For Claude Code, Meta's get-started guide gives:

claude mcp add --transport http --client-id <META_APP_ID> meta-ads https://mcp.facebook.com/ads

For ChatGPT, Meta's steps are written for developer mode. OpenAI's custom MCP server guide now says you don't need to turn on Developer Mode first: go to Plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server, and finish with Create as a plugin. OpenAI lists custom servers for Business and Enterprise/Edu on ChatGPT web, with Pro limited to read/fetch, as of October 2026. In the authentication step, Meta says to choose "OAuth" as the authentication method, enter https://mcp.facebook.com/ads as the server URL and add your app ID under "Advanced OAuth Settings." The app's redirect URL must match your client, or OAuth will fail.

For programmatic use with a user token, send Authorization: Bearer <ACCESS_TOKEN> to the same URL.

If you do not own a Meta app, Meta points you to a separate guide on setting up Meta ads AI connectors.

Security notes

  • This server can spend money. Creating or editing campaigns changes live ad delivery. Keep human approval on for every write call in your client.
  • Grant the minimum. ads_read is enough for reporting. Add ads_management and the other optional permissions only for people who need them.
  • Admin system users are blocked. Meta rejects Admin-role system user tokens. Use an Employee-role system user scoped to the right ad accounts.
  • Redirect URL hygiene. A mismatched redirect breaks OAuth. Never paste tokens into chat to "fix" it; see MCP token passthrough.
  • Activity logs exist. Meta lists activity logs as a tool category. Review them after AI-driven changes.
