How to Connect Claude to Ahrefs with MCP

This guide is part of our MCP connection guides, within The MCP Guide. Steps are copied from the vendor's own documentation. Need a custom connection? See MCP development.

Connecting Claude to Ahrefs lets you research keywords, check backlinks and track AI search visibility by asking questions in plain English. Claude pulls live Ahrefs data into the chat and can combine several reports in one answer. Ahrefs hosts the server and publishes a setup guide for Claude on the web and desktop.

Checked against: Ahrefs' Claude Desktop/Web setup guide and Claude's guide to getting started with connectors on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not run these steps; menus can change, so follow the vendor's page if it differs.

Key Takeaways

  • Ahrefs' remote MCP server is available on paid plans starting from Lite.
  • Ahrefs documents two ways to connect Claude: the directory connector with OAuth, or an MCP key in the desktop app's config file.
  • Every call uses API units from your monthly Ahrefs allowance, the same as direct API use.
  • Keys created through OAuth default to a cap of 200,000 API units a month, which workspace admins can change.
  • Claude's directory lists the connector as "Anthropic verified," made by Ahrefs Pte. Ltd., with 61 tools.

Before you start

You need a Claude account signed in at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app. Ahrefs' MCP introduction says the server is for "users with a Lite plan or higher." Each plan also has a row limit per request and a monthly allowance of API units. See Ahrefs pricing for plan limits.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector for the organization first. To create an MCP key for the second method, you need access to your Ahrefs workspace's account settings.

Steps

Method 1: Connect with OAuth (claude.ai and desktop)

Ahrefs' guide calls this "Using OAuth Authorization." The connector URL in Claude's directory is:

https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp
  1. Open Customize, select Connectors, and click the + (Add) button. Claude's docs describe this as Customize > Connectors, then Discover.
  2. Search for "Ahrefs" and click the card.
  3. Click Connect. Claude's current docs label this button Connect to Claude.
  4. Choose your Ahrefs workspace and select your account.
  5. In the consent popup, click Allow.
  6. Ahrefs says you will see a confirmation message, and "Ahrefs" will appear in your list of connectors.
  7. In a chat, select +, select Connectors, and turn on Ahrefs.

Method 2: Use an MCP key in Claude Desktop

Ahrefs also documents a key-based setup for the desktop app:

  1. Click your profile icon in the lower-left corner and choose Settings.
  2. Under Desktop app, select Developer and click Edit config. This opens claude_desktop_config.json.
  3. Add this configuration, copied from Ahrefs' guide:
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Ahrefs": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp",
        "--header",
        "Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}"
      ],
      "env": {
        "AUTH_HEADER": "Bearer $MCP Key"
      }
    }
  }
}
  1. In Ahrefs, go to Account Settings, then API Keys, and click Generate MCP key.
  2. Replace $MCP Key in the file with your key and save it.
  3. Restart the Claude desktop app.

Use Method 1 unless you have a reason not to. The key in Method 2 sits in a plain config file on your computer.

Check that it works

Ahrefs says to make sure the tools a query needs are enabled before you run it.

Example prompts:

  • "In table form, Using site-explorer-refdomains, display the top 10 referring domains for ahrefs.com from the past 7 days." (Ahrefs' own example)
  • "Use keywords-explorer-overview to show search volume and difficulty for 'roof repair cost' in the US."
  • "Use brand-radar-sov-overview to compare our share of voice in AI responses with two competitors."

Permissions and safety

  • Spending cap per key. Ahrefs says OAuth keys for MCP default to 200,000 API units a month. Workspace admins can change or remove that limit in the API keys report. Manually created keys have no per-key limit by default.
  • Connection is visible in Ahrefs. After you approve, the connection appears in your account as an API key tagged with the MCP scope.
  • Tool approval in Claude. Ahrefs' guide says a connector set to ask permission will prompt you before each query. In Claude's current menus, open the connector under Customize > Connectors and choose Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked in Tool permissions. Keep approval on until you know what each query costs in units.
  • Usage rules. Ahrefs says calling the MCP endpoint through custom scripts, bridges or standalone clients is not permitted. Use its public API for programmatic access.
  • See the MCP Security Center and MCP excessive permissions for broader guidance.

If it doesn't work

  • No access. Ahrefs requires a paid plan from Lite up. Plans below Lite do not include MCP access.
  • Running out of units. Check usage under Account settings, then Limits and usage. A key may also have hit its 200,000-unit monthly cap.
  • Repeated permission prompts. The connector is set to ask before each tool runs. Change it in Tool permissions.
  • Method 2 not loading. Check the JSON is valid, the key replaced $MCP Key, and you restarted the desktop app.

Frequently asked questions

Which Ahrefs plan do I need to use it in Claude?

Ahrefs says the remote MCP server is available on paid plans starting from Lite. Higher tiers include more monthly API units.

Does using Ahrefs in Claude cost extra?

Ahrefs doesn't list a separate MCP fee. Calls use API units from your plan's monthly allowance, the same way as direct API use. Enterprise customers can buy extra units.

Can I use Ahrefs in the Claude mobile app?

Ahrefs publishes a separate Claude Mobile guide. Claude's docs say connectors you connect on the web or desktop are available in the mobile app too.

OAuth or MCP key: which should I use?

Use OAuth from the directory for most people. It creates a key with a 200,000-unit default cap and needs no file editing. Ahrefs offers manual MCP keys for setups like the desktop config file.
