Top SEO Agencies in San Francisco in 2026-2027
Top SEO Agencies in San Francisco in 2026-2027

Disclosure: eSEOspace publishes this blog and ranks itself first. Every other entry was researched independently and links to its own site.
Key Takeaways
- San Francisco's search market divides into three lanes: enterprise and technical SEO for funded tech companies, B2B demand generation for long sales cycles, and full-funnel growth work where SEO is one channel among several. Pick the lane before you pick the firm.
- Price signals here are higher than almost any US market and some are public. Victorious recommends a minimum of $6,000 a month with a 12-month commitment per its site, which is a useful anchor for what enterprise-grade retained SEO costs in this city.
- Half this list is not in San Francisco proper. Baunfire and Sembyotic are in San Jose, Web Tonic was founded in Montreal, and Victorious lists a dozen US offices. In the Bay Area that is normal and mostly harmless, but be clear about what you are buying if a local office matters to you.
- AI search work has stopped being a differentiator and become table stakes. Victorious, AdLift, Single Grain and Jives Media all now sell answer engine or generative engine optimization alongside classic organic SEO.
- The most common San Francisco failure mode is a rankings problem that is really a rendering problem. A React or Next.js application that ships an empty shell to crawlers cannot be fixed with content, and the firms that understand that are a different shortlist from the ones that publish blog posts.
- Founder-led agencies dominate the mid-market here. AdLift, Single Grain and Jives Media are all closely identified with their founders, which is a real advantage for senior thinking and a real risk for consistency at scale. Ask who actually runs your account.
- Check reviews at the individual level, not the star average, and check whether the reviewer bought the service you are buying. An agency can be excellent at paid media and mediocre at technical SEO with one blended rating covering both.
How we evaluated these agencies
Four things decided the ranking, in this order.
Evidence of search work specifically. A great many Bay Area agencies list SEO and then sell paid media, brand or growth retainers. We favoured firms where search is a documented core of the business rather than a line on a capabilities deck.
Attributable proof. Named clients on the firm's own site, published case studies, verified directory reviews and stated partner status. Claims that exist only inside a hero headline were treated as marketing, not evidence.
Fit clarity. Agency relationships fail on mismatch far more often than on competence. Every entry gets an explicit worst-fit note, because knowing who should not hire a firm is more useful than another paragraph of praise.
Price transparency. Where a firm publishes a minimum, a range or a commitment length, we quoted it and attributed it. Where it does not, we describe the shape of the engagement rather than inventing a number.
We did not rank on office location. San Francisco is a market, not a delivery model, and most of the work on this list is executed identically whether the team is in SoMa, San Jose or remote. Where a local office is genuinely part of the value, we say so in the entry.

1. eSEOspace
Founded: 2019
eSEOspace sits at the top of our own list and you should read that with the disclosure above in mind. The argument for the placement is structural rather than reputational. Most firms on this page do one part of the job extremely well and hand you off for the rest. We run organic SEO, AI search visibility, conversion rate optimization and the website build inside one team, which removes the most common failure mode in a search programme: rankings improve, nothing converts, and two vendors point at each other.
That matters more in San Francisco than in most markets, because so many sites here are applications rather than websites. When the product marketing site is a React or Next.js build, a meaningful share of what looks like an SEO problem is a rendering, routing or internal-linking problem that lives in the codebase. An agency that can only file recommendations will file them, and they will sit in a backlog behind the product roadmap. We would rather change the site.
Best for: Companies that want search, content, conversion and development owned by a single accountable team, and that are comfortable with a partner who will ship changes rather than document them.
Worst fit: If you need a large retained enterprise programme with a dedicated pod, quarterly business reviews and a nine-figure brand's procurement process satisfied, Victorious is built for that and we are not. If your priority is a standing weekly meeting at a San Francisco address, hire a firm with an office you can walk to.
2. WebVello
Founded: 2024
WebVello builds on WordPress and Shopify and does SEO on top of what it builds. That combination is underrepresented on Bay Area shortlists and it solves a specific problem: a large share of stalled SEO programmes are actually stalled platform programmes. A bloated theme, a Shopify collection structure generating thin duplicate pages, a rebuild that dropped two hundred redirects. None of that is fixed by publishing more content.
Hiring the team that owns the codebase to also own the rankings collapses the usual finger-pointing loop. For merchants that overlaps directly with ecommerce SEO work, where template-level changes move more revenue than any single content push.
Best for: Businesses rebuilding a WordPress or Shopify site that also has to rank, and merchants who want technical fixes shipped rather than written up.
Worst fit: Buyers who require a long operating history or an enterprise-scale team. WebVello was founded in 2024. If your board wants a decade of receipts, Victorious, AdLift or Jives Media will clear that bar and WebVello will not.
3. Victorious
Location: San Francisco headquarters, with offices listed in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Washington DC, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Diego and Seattle
Victorious is the most substantial dedicated SEO firm headquartered in San Francisco, and it is the default answer for a company buying enterprise search at scale. Its site states 12 years of work in enterprise and technical SEO, more than 600 brands served, 119 reviews on Clutch, 183-plus awards between 2018 and 2025 including five Search Agency of the Year wins, and clients including SoFi, GE Digital, Delta Dental, Wayfair, Bissell and Salesforce.
The service mix is what you would expect at that tier: technical SEO, on-page and off-page work, keyword research, audits, site migrations, content, link building, plus answer engine optimization aimed at ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot and Claude. Migrations being a named line is worth noting, because a botched replatform destroys more organic revenue in a fortnight than a good content programme creates in a year.
The unusually useful detail is the published commercial position: its site recommends a minimum of $6,000 a month with a 12-month commitment. That is a real filter. If that number is beyond your budget, you are not this firm's client and both of you are better off knowing early. If it is comfortable, you are buying a large, awarded, process-driven organisation rather than a founder's attention.
Best for: Funded and enterprise companies with the budget for a retained programme, especially those facing a migration or carrying real technical debt.
Worst fit: Small businesses, early-stage startups and anyone who wants a month-to-month arrangement. A 12-month commitment at that minimum is a serious purchase, and firms further down this list will take a smaller engagement seriously.
4. AdLift
Location: Bay Area, with services listed across San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and other US cities
AdLift is a Bay Area search and performance agency led by co-founder and CEO Prashant Puri, whose profile on the site cites over 17 years in the industry and regular speaking at conferences including Semrush and Digital Summit. Its services span SEO, content marketing, paid media, and a notably built-out AI search practice covering AI SEO, LLM SEO, generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization as separate named lines. Its site states Google Partner and Facebook Partner status and displays clients including Shopify, PayPal, Peloton, Airbnb and Walmart, with published case studies claiming a 288 percent increase in SEO traffic for Airbnb, 47 percent traffic improvement for Tynker and 129 percent revenue improvement for Kremp Florist.
The reason to shortlist AdLift is breadth at consumer scale. Firms that have worked on marketplace and consumer brands have met the problems that only appear at volume: template-level optimisation across tens of thousands of pages, internal linking as an engineering problem, and the interaction between paid and organic on the same commercial terms. If your site is large and transactional, that experience is the thing you are buying.
Treat the published percentage improvements the way you should treat any agency case study: as the firm's own account of its work, useful directionally and worth asking about specifically in a sales call, including what the baseline was and what else changed at the same time.
Best for: Consumer, marketplace and ecommerce brands with large sites, especially those wanting organic and paid managed together.
Worst fit: Highly technical B2B companies with small addressable markets and long sales cycles, where a demand-generation specialist like Sembyotic fits the problem better. Also not the pick if you want an unusually small, senior engagement.
5. Jives Media
Founded: 2012 | Location: California, serving clients nationwide
Jives Media is a full-service digital marketing agency covering SEO and AI SEO, Google Ads and paid social, web design and branding, social, email, video and conversion optimization. Its site states more than 100 clients served, over $150 million in media managed, Google Premier Partner status, five Clutch Agency of the Year designations, and recognition from Expertise.com and Forbes. The stated team model puts six named roles on an account: a marketing director, an MBA brand strategist, a project manager, an SEO analyst, an ad manager and a creative designer.
That team structure is the most informative thing on the site, because it tells you what you are actually buying. This is a pod model built for a mid-market company that does not have a marketing department and needs one, rather than a specialist bench for a company that already has strategy in-house and needs execution depth in a single channel. For a Bay Area services business, a professional practice or a regional brand, that is frequently the correct purchase.
Best for: Mid-market companies that want search, paid, creative and web handled by one accountable team rather than assembled from specialists.
Worst fit: Enterprise technical SEO programmes and companies with an existing senior in-house marketing team. If you already have strategy covered and need deep specialist execution, buy the specialist. A generalist pod is overhead in that situation.
6. Single Grain
Location: Multiple offices; founded and led by Eric Siu
Single Grain is one of the better-known growth agencies to come out of the Bay Area, and its current positioning leans hard into AI search. Its site lists AEO and GEO work across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot alongside SEO and technical SEO, paid media across Google, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube, CRO, content and AI implementation. It states more than 500 companies served, over $1 billion in revenue influenced and a 3.2x average client ROI, and lists work with Amazon Alexa, Nextiva, Lever, Schumacher Homes, Learning A-Z, SmartRent and Klassy Network. It also builds its own products, including Single Brain, ClickFlow and Karrot.ai.
The argument for Single Grain is thought leadership converted into method. Eric Siu is a prolific podcaster and writer, and that visibility means the firm tends to be early to channels rather than late. The argument against is the same fact viewed from a different angle: a founder-brand agency is only as good as the seniority actually assigned to your account, and the person whose content persuaded you is not the person who will run your campaign.
Ask directly, in the first call, who leads the account, how much of their week you get, and how long they have been at the firm. That question is fair everywhere and essential here.
Best for: Growth-stage SaaS and ecommerce companies that want senior strategic direction and are actively investing in AI search visibility.
Worst fit: Companies wanting a single-channel technical SEO engagement with deep engineering involvement, and buyers who dislike the multi-channel growth-agency model. If your problem is that your Next.js site does not render for crawlers, hire an engineering-led firm.
7. Baunfire
Location: 75 E Santa Clara St, San Jose, California
Baunfire is a design and development studio rather than an SEO agency, and it is on this list on purpose. A large share of San Francisco and Silicon Valley search problems are website problems: a marketing site that ships as a client-rendered application, an information architecture that buries every commercial page four clicks deep, a rebuild that shipped without redirects, a component library with no headings in it. None of that is fixed by a content calendar.
Baunfire describes itself as a team of designers, developers, strategists and producers building websites that drive traffic, engagement and conversion for industry-leading brands and startups. Published work includes Karat, Cellares, Lumana and Ambi Robotics, and directory listings for the studio cite Google among its clients with a 5.0 rating across 50 to 100 reviews.
Hire this firm when the honest diagnosis is that your site needs rebuilding and you want the rebuild done by people who understand technical SEO rather than retrofitting it afterwards. That sequencing matters: a site rebuilt without search input is the most expensive way to lose rankings, and it happens constantly in this market.
Best for: Funded tech companies rebuilding a marketing site, where the constraint is the website itself rather than the content programme.
Worst fit: Anyone looking for retained monthly SEO, link acquisition or content production. This is a project-based studio, and treating it as an ongoing search partner would be a category error. Note also that San Jose is roughly an hour south of San Francisco, which matters if you want people in your office.
8. Sembyotic
Location: San Jose, California
Sembyotic is a B2B specialist, and B2B is a different discipline from consumer SEO in ways that generalist agencies routinely underestimate. Its site describes enterprise digital advertising, PPC, lead generation, digital marketing strategy, search optimization, web design and development, maintenance and copywriting, aimed explicitly at reaching enterprise decision-makers through a multi-channel approach. It displays more than 30 client logos including Aerospike, Ambarella, AuthenticID, Cadence, Infoblox and Pepperdata.
That client list is the credential. Those are semiconductor, infrastructure and enterprise software companies, which means the firm has worked with tiny keyword volumes, highly technical buyers, six to eighteen month sales cycles and content that has to survive review by engineers. If you are a Bay Area B2B technology company, an agency that has repeatedly done that is worth more than a larger firm with better consumer case studies, because the failure mode in B2B is not ranking, it is ranking for terms no buyer searches.
Best for: Enterprise B2B technology companies with technical buyers, long cycles and small but valuable search volumes. Our B2B SEO page covers why that work is scoped differently.
Worst fit: DTC, ecommerce and local service businesses. The playbook does not transfer, and a firm optimised for enterprise pipeline is the wrong shape for a store. As with Baunfire, San Jose is not San Francisco if proximity matters to you.
9. Web Tonic
Founded: 2018 in Montreal, Canada | Location: offices listed in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, London, Paris, Dubai and Singapore
Web Tonic is a growth marketing agency where SEO sits alongside paid search and social, performance creative, data and tracking work, and web development on Shopify, Webflow and custom platforms. Its site states 750 brands served since 2018, that it works with companies generating over $500,000 annually, a proprietary methodology built around server-side tracking and live KPI dashboards, and a Best PPC Campaign win at the Global Agency Awards 2026. Its client display includes very large consumer brands.
Two honest notes. First, this is a paid-media-led agency with SEO as one of several services, not a search specialist, so buy it as a full-funnel growth vendor rather than as an organic search partner. Second, when any agency displays extremely large brand logos, ask in the first call what the specific engagement was, which team delivered it and when. That is a reasonable question, good agencies answer it comfortably, and the answer tells you a great deal.
The genuine strength here is measurement. Server-side tracking and shared dashboards are underrated, and a lot of SEO disputes are really attribution disputes that better instrumentation would have settled.
Best for: Ecommerce and DTC brands past early revenue that want one vendor across paid, organic, creative and analytics.
Worst fit: Companies buying deep technical or enterprise SEO, and B2B firms with long sales cycles. For those, Victorious or Sembyotic fit the problem better.

Frequently asked questions
What does SEO cost in San Francisco in 2026?
More than almost anywhere else in the US, and the one public anchor on this list is useful: Victorious recommends a minimum of $6,000 a month with a 12-month commitment. Mid-market retainers in the Bay Area commonly land between $3,000 and $10,000 a month depending on scope, and project work such as an audit or a migration plan is usually quoted separately. If a Bay Area agency offers you meaningful enterprise SEO for a few hundred dollars a month, what is being sold is reporting, not work.
Do I need an agency with a San Francisco office?
Only if location does real work for you. It does when the engagement depends on in-person workshops with a distributed stakeholder group, or when your executive team will simply not engage over video. It does not for technical SEO, content or AI-visibility work, which is executed identically regardless of geography. Notice too that half this list is not in San Francisco proper: two firms are in San Jose and one was founded in Montreal. Be honest with yourself about whether you want a local partner or you just want to feel like you have one.
My site is a React or Next.js app and it does not rank. Who fixes that?
Not a content agency. If your pages depend on client-side rendering, crawlers may be receiving a near-empty document, and no amount of keyword work changes that. The fix lives in the rendering strategy: server rendering or static generation for indexable routes, real anchor tags for internal links, correct canonical and metadata output, and a sitemap generated from the actual route list. Hire an engineering-led firm, or an SEO team that will work directly in your repository. This is the single most common expensive mistake in this market.
Is generative engine optimization real work or a rebrand?
It is real work with a lot of marketing wrapped around it. Getting cited in AI answers depends on structured, extractable content, clean entity signals, corroboration from third-party sources and a technically clean site, which overlaps heavily with good classic SEO but is not identical to it. Victorious, AdLift, Single Grain and Jives Media all sell it in this market today. The question worth asking a vendor is how they measure it, because a service with no scoreboard is a retainer with no accountability. Our own approach lives on the AI SEO page.
How long before SEO produces revenue?
Plan on six to twelve months for competitive commercial terms and less for long-tail and local queries. In San Francisco specifically, the timeline is usually decided by two things that have nothing to do with content: how much technical debt the site carries, and how quickly your engineering team can ship changes. An agency with a perfect plan and a six-week deployment queue will move slower than a mediocre plan on a site that can ship daily. Ask about implementation before you ask about strategy.
Should I hire for SEO or conversion first?
If your organic traffic is flat, hire for SEO. If traffic is healthy and revenue is not, hire for conversion. Doubling traffic to a page that converts at 0.4 percent is a more expensive route to the same revenue than fixing the page. We treat conversion work as part of the same programme rather than a separate purchase, and any agency that will not discuss what happens after the click is optimising for a metric you cannot bank.
The bottom line
San Francisco's search market is well segmented once you look past the directory listings. Victorious is the enterprise default and publishes a commitment level that tells you immediately whether you are its client. AdLift is the consumer and marketplace pick with unusual depth in AI search. Jives Media sells a whole marketing function to companies that do not have one. Single Grain is senior, opinionated and worth buying for direction rather than execution. Baunfire and Sembyotic are both in San Jose and both answer questions the SEO agencies cannot: rebuild the site properly, and understand a technical enterprise buyer. Web Tonic is the full-funnel growth option with the best measurement story.
We put eSEOspace first because most companies here are buying three things at once, search, conversion and the website itself, and get worse outcomes when those live in three contracts. Judge that argument on its merits rather than on its position on our own page. Then run whichever finalists survive through the same test: ask each one to name the specific change they would make in the first thirty days, and hire the one whose answer sounds like work rather than a deck.
