Overview
Why Teams Move Off HubSpot CMS
Most companies do not arrive at HubSpot CMS by evaluating content management systems. They arrive because they already bought HubSpot for the CRM and marketing automation, and hosting the website there was the path of least resistance. That works well for a while. The friction usually starts when the marketing site becomes genuinely important to the business and the constraints start to bind.
Those constraints are consistent. Pricing scales with tier rather than with what the site actually does, so the hosting line grows as you add contacts and seats that have nothing to do with the website. HubL templates and the design manager set real limits on what a developer can build, and working around them is slower than building from scratch. And because the site lives inside the platform, leaving later gets harder the longer you stay — the content, the templates, and the URL structure are all shaped by it.
The important thing to say plainly: leaving HubSpot CMS does not mean leaving HubSpot. Most of the businesses we move keep the CRM, the forms, the email, and the reporting exactly as they are. What changes is where the website is built and hosted — and that is a much smaller decision than the subscription implies.
What changes
What Changes When You Migrate
The website moves. The CRM stays. Here is how each piece translates.
HubL templates become real code
Modules, templates, and the design manager give way to application code with no platform contract to satisfy. What was awkward to express in HubL usually becomes ordinary work.
Forms keep feeding HubSpot
Forms are rebuilt on the new site and submit into HubSpot through its API or embedded form. Contacts, workflows, lifecycle stages, and attribution keep working exactly as before.
Tracking and analytics carry over
The HubSpot tracking script goes on the new site, so page views, sessions, and attribution continue reporting into the same dashboards your team already reads.
Blog content is exported, not stranded
Posts, authors, tags, and featured images are exported through the API and imported into the new structure, with internal links rewritten so nothing points back at the old domain.
Hosting cost decouples from CRM cost
Website hosting becomes a small, predictable line rather than a function of your HubSpot tier. Teams that were paying for a CMS tier purely to host the site typically see that reverse quickly.
You own the site outright
The code, the content, and the deployment are yours. There is no design manager to work within and no tier gating what the site is allowed to do.
Why migrate
What You Gain With a Custom Build
The first gain is that the website stops being priced as a CRM feature. Hosting a marketing site is genuinely inexpensive; paying for it through a subscription tier sized by contact count is not. Separating the two usually improves the economics immediately, and it keeps improving as the CRM side grows for reasons unrelated to the website.
The second is that the constraints disappear. A custom build has no template system to fight, no module framework to bend, and no gated features. If the site needs an unusual interaction, a bespoke content model, or an integration nobody anticipated, it can simply have one — and performance is a design decision rather than something you optimize within someone else's rendering pipeline.
The process
The Migration Process, Step by Step
The website is rebuilt and moved. The CRM keeps running throughout.
Audit and inventory
Catalog pages, blog posts, landing pages, templates, modules, and forms, and crawl the live site for the complete URL list and the pages earning organic traffic. Landing pages are easy to miss and often carry real search value.
Map the integration boundary
Decide exactly what stays in HubSpot — CRM, forms, workflows, email, tracking — and what moves. Getting this line clear up front is what keeps the migration from touching systems it does not need to.
Export content
Pages, posts, authors, tags, and media are exported through the HubSpot API and transformed into the new content model, with internal links and asset references rewritten.
Build and wire the integrations
The site is built on staging, and forms are wired into HubSpot and tested end to end — a real submission should create the contact, fire the workflow, and appear in reporting before anyone signs off.
Redirect mapping and QA
Every indexed URL, including blog and landing pages, is mapped to its destination. Metadata and structured data are verified, and tracking is confirmed to be reporting correctly.
Launch and monitor
After the DNS switch we watch crawl stats, index coverage, rankings, and — just as important here — form submissions and contact creation, so any integration gap surfaces immediately.
Protect your rankings
Protecting Your SEO Through the Migration
HubSpot migrations have a particular failure mode: landing pages. Marketing teams accumulate them over years, they often sit on their own URL patterns, and they are easy to leave out of an inventory built from the main navigation. Some of them rank, and some carry backlinks from campaigns nobody remembers running. The redirect map has to come from a crawl plus an API export, not from the site menu.
Blog URLs need the same attention. HubSpot's blog paths rarely match whatever structure you choose next, so expect an explicit URL-by-URL map rather than a pattern rule. Titles, descriptions, canonicals, and structured data all have to be extracted from HubSpot's page settings and re-applied deliberately on the new site.
After launch there are two things to watch rather than one. The usual SEO signals — coverage, crawl errors, rankings — and the commercial signal of form submissions still reaching the CRM. A migration that keeps every ranking but quietly drops a form is not a successful one, so both get monitored through the same window.
