Initially, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases, with multi-item carts, expanded regions, and additional merchants rolling out in future updates.

Open-Sourcing the Agentic Commerce Protocol

OpenAI is also open-sourcing the technology behind Instant Checkout—the Agentic Commerce Protocol—so developers and merchants worldwide can build their own AI commerce integrations.

Co-developed with Stripe and leading merchants, the Agentic Commerce Protocol is designed to be secure, interoperable, and easy to integrate. It provides a universal “language” for AI agents and businesses to communicate securely and complete transactions.

How Instant Checkout Works

When a user asks a shopping-related question—like “best running shoes under $100” or “gifts for a ceramics lover”—ChatGPT surfaces the most relevant products from across the web.

• Product results are organic and unsponsored, ranked purely by relevance.

• If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap “Buy,” confirm shipping and payment details, and complete the order—all without leaving ChatGPT.

• Existing ChatGPT subscribers can use their saved payment methods or add new ones via Stripe’s secure payment infrastructure.

Importantly, merchants handle all fulfillment, payments, and customer service using their existing systems. ChatGPT acts as a secure intermediary—like a digital personal shopper—passing only the necessary details to complete the transaction.

Fair, Transparent, and Merchant-Friendly

Merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases, while the service remains free for users. Instant Checkout does not affect product rankings or user pricing.

When multiple merchants sell the same item, ChatGPT considers factors such as:

• Price and quality

• Merchant status (primary seller or not)

• Instant Checkout enablement
