How to Connect Claude to Canva with MCP

This guide is part of our MCP connection guides, within The MCP Guide. Steps are copied from the vendor's own documentation. Need a custom connection? See MCP development.

Connecting Claude to Canva lets you search your Canva designs, generate new ones from a text description, export them and add comments, all from a chat. Canva builds the connector, and it is listed in Claude's Connectors directory.

Checked against: Claude's Canva connector listing and Claude's guide to getting started with connectors on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not run these steps; menus can change, so follow the vendor's page if it differs.

Key Takeaways

  • Canva's connector is in Claude's directory as "Anthropic verified," made by Canva, at https://mcp.canva.com/mcp, so you add it without typing a URL.
  • Every person signs in to Canva individually; Canva does not support one shared organization login.
  • Claude can only reach designs and assets you can already access, and edits only work where you have edit rights.
  • Core features work on all Canva plans, but resizing, autofill, brand kits and brand templates need Canva Pro or above.
  • Design generation can be slow, so a timeout on a first try is not always a failed connection.

Before you start

You need a Claude account signed in at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app. You also need a Canva account. Canva's access page says each user of Canva's tools in an AI assistant needs their own Canva account.

Check your Canva plan. Canva says design generation, editing, search, exports, comments and asset uploads work on all plans. Resizing designs to new dimensions, autofill, brand kits and brand templates need Canva Pro and above.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector for the organization first. Members then connect with their own Canva account.

Steps

Claude's directory shows this connector URL for Canva. You don't need to paste it when you install from the directory.

https://mcp.canva.com/mcp
  1. Go to Customize > Connectors in claude.ai. In the desktop app, select Customize in the sidebar, then Connectors.
  2. Select Discover, type "Canva" in Search connectors, and open the Canva listing.
  3. Select Connect to Claude. If you are a Team or Enterprise owner, the button reads Connect for your team. Members who can't add connectors see Request.
  4. Claude opens Canva's sign-in page. On claude.ai it opens in the same tab; in the desktop app it opens in your browser. Sign in, review the access Claude asks for, and approve it.
  5. Back on the Connectors page, check that Canva is listed under Your connectors with the status Connected.
  6. In a chat, select + in the message box, select Connectors, and turn on the Canva toggle.

Canva also publishes its own end-user setup guides in its Help Center. That page blocked our automated check, so the steps above follow Claude's documentation and the Canva listing.

Check that it works

The Claude listing names the tools Canva exposes, including search-designs, get-design, export-design, generate-design, create-folder and add-comment-thread-to-design.

Example prompts:

  • "Search my Canva designs for anything with 'webinar' in the title and list them with links." (uses search-designs)
  • "Generate a square Instagram post design announcing our spring sale." (uses generate-design)
  • "Export my design called 'Q3 report cover' as a PDF." (uses get-export-formats and export-design)

Claude asks before it uses a tool. Select Allow once while you test.

Permissions and safety

  • Your access, no more. Canva says the operations available match your level of access to each design or asset. Editing only works on designs you can edit.
  • Per-user sign-in. Canva says you can't set up one service account for everyone. Each person completes the OAuth flow, which keeps people out of each other's content.
  • Writes exist. Tools such as generate-design, create-folder, move-item-to-folder and add-comment-thread-to-design change things in your Canva account. Under Customize > Connectors, open Canva and set Tool permissions to Needs approval for write tools.
  • Usage policy. Canva's usage policy and Developer Terms apply to MCP use.
  • Untrusted content. Text inside shared designs reaches Claude as input. Read MCP prompt injection and the MCP Security Center before you let Claude write.

If it doesn't work

Canva's troubleshooting page lists these issues:

  • Timeouts. generate-design can take longer than other tools. Canva recommends a 60-second timeout for clients you control. In Claude, try the request again or ask for a simpler design.
  • Blocked domains. The server talks over canva.com and canva.ai. If your network filters traffic, allow both.
  • Missing features. Resizing, autofill and brand templates need Canva Pro or above.
  • Access errors. You can only reach your own designs and those shared with you.

If Claude loses access later, the connector shows Reconnect in Customize > Connectors. Select it and sign in again.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Canva Pro to use Canva in Claude?

No, not for the basics. Canva says generation, editing, search, exports, comments and asset uploads work on all plans. Resizing, autofill, brand kits and brand templates need Canva Pro or above.

Can my whole team share one Canva login in Claude?

No. Canva doesn't support organization-level authentication for its MCP server. Each person signs in with their own Canva account and sees only the content they can access.

Can Claude edit my existing Canva designs?

Canva's developer docs describe editing tools, limited to designs you have edit rights on. As of October 2026, Claude's Canva listing shows search, generate, export, folder and comment tools but no editing tools. Check the listing for the current set.

Why does Canva take so long to create a design?

Canva says generate-design can run longer than its other tools. Give it time, then retry if it fails.
