OpenAI has taken a significant leap into the e-commerce space with the launch of Instant Checkout, a new feature that allows users to purchase products directly through its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. Announced on Monday, this feature is initially available to U.S. users across all ChatGPT plans—Free, Plus, and Pro—and supports single-item purchases from U.S.-based Etsy sellers. OpenAI plans to expand this functionality to over one million Shopify merchants, including major brands like Skims and Glossier, in the near future.

A Boost for E-Commerce and OpenAI’s Revenue

The announcement had an immediate impact on the market, with Etsy shares surging over 13% and Shopify’s stock rising more than 5% on Monday. For OpenAI, Instant Checkout represents a potential new revenue stream, as the company will take a fee from completed transactions. While the exact fee structure remains confidential, OpenAI emphasized that the feature is free for users and will not affect product prices.

This move comes as OpenAI continues to scale its computing infrastructure and work toward profitability. According to Michelle Fradin, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT commerce, the goal is to make ChatGPT not just a source of information but a tool for real-world action. “It’s about helping users get things done,” Fradin told CNBC.

How Instant Checkout Works

Powered by OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, Instant Checkout enables seamless transactions directly within ChatGPT. The framework, developed in partnership with Stripe, allows users to make purchases without leaving the chatbot interface. For example, if a user is browsing products and finds an item from an Etsy seller, they can complete the purchase directly in ChatGPT without being redirected to the merchant’s website.

For existing ChatGPT subscribers, the process is even more streamlined. Since their payment information is already stored for subscriptions, they can use it for purchases without re-entering details. OpenAI is also open-sourcing the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help merchants and developers build integrations faster and explore new use cases.

Future Plans and Expansions

OpenAI has ambitious plans for Instant Checkout, including the introduction of multi-item carts and expanding the feature’s availability beyond the U.S. The company also sees potential for the Agentic Commerce Protocol to facilitate other types of payments and transactions, further broadening its applications.

This launch builds on OpenAI’s recent push into e-commerce. In April, the company introduced product recommendations as part of its search experience, surfacing products ranked by relevance rather than partnerships. With over 700 million weekly active users on ChatGPT as of August, a significant portion of user queries already revolve around shopping and commerce, from finding specific items to planning events.

Fradin highlighted the importance of making the shopping journey as effortless as possible for users while enabling merchants to convert conversations into sales. “What we wanted to do is make it even easier for users to complete their journey in ChatGPT,” she said.
