This comparison is part of our MCP comparisons, within The MCP Guide. Facts are checked against each vendor's own documentation and pricing pages on the date shown.
Pick QuickBooks if you want an AI app to create and send invoices from a hosted connector, with confirmation before deletes. Pick Xero if you want a hosted connector that can only read your books, which is a safer start for reporting questions. In both cases, the bigger decision is usually which accounting system you already use; switching ledgers to get a better MCP server rarely makes sense.
Checked against: Claude's QuickBooks connector listing and Claude's Xero connector listing on 28 October 2026, plus each vendor's GitHub repository. eSEOspace did not test either product.
Key Takeaways
- Intuit's hosted connector lists 74 tools and can create, update, send, duplicate and schedule invoices and estimates.
- Xero's hosted connector lists 20 tools, and the listing says "Claude connects with read-only access."
- Both vendors publish open-source local servers that can write: Intuit's lists 145 tools, and Xero's has create and update tools.
- Neither vendor lists a separate MCP fee; you pay for the accounting subscription.
- LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) is a third option: a ledger designed for an AI to keep the books, free to start.

Where QuickBooks is stronger
Writes from the hosted connector
Claude's QuickBooks listing says the connector can "Create, update, send, duplicate, and schedule invoices and estimates." It adds that this happens "always with a clear preview and your confirmation before anything is sent." Intuit's help article also lists profit and loss, cash flow, industry benchmarking and transaction imports.
Delete confirmation
Intuit's help article says: "If you ask Claude to delete anything, like an invoice or an estimate, it will ask you to confirm first before it deletes." For a busy owner sending invoices from chat, that confirmation step matters.
Granular switches in the local server
Intuit's open-source server runs locally over stdio and "includes full CRUD operations for 29 entity types and 11 financial reports." Three settings turn off create, update or delete tools. Read tools stay available, so you can run it read-only with one change.
Works without a subscription
Intuit says "You can use the QuickBooks Connector without an active Intuit account." You supply the data yourself, such as a bank export. Live data needs an active QuickBooks or Intuit Enterprise Suite subscription.
Where Xero is stronger
Read-only by design
The Xero listing says "Claude connects with read-only access" and that retrieved data "is never stored between sessions." Its 20 tools include get_financial_position, get_profit_and_loss, get_invoices and get_bank_account_transactions. If you only want answers about your numbers, read-only removes a whole class of mistakes.
Narrow writes in the local server
Xero's open-source server can create invoices, contacts and payments. Its update-invoice tool works on an "existing draft invoice," and the only delete tool is delete-payroll-timesheet. That narrower write surface suits teams that want some automation without broad edit rights.
Payroll tools for NZ and UK
The README includes payroll employee, leave and timesheet tools. It notes that "To use Payroll-specific queries, the region should be either NZ or UK."
Scope control
Custom connections made on or after 29 April 2026 use Xero's granular scopes. You can narrow access further with the XERO_SCOPES setting.
A third option: LedgerMCP
LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) takes a different approach. It is double-entry bookkeeping software with the MCP server built in, so your AI is expected to do the bookkeeping. LedgerMCP's docs list 74 tools at https://ledgermcp.com/mcp, with OAuth or an API key. Read-only keys can run lists and reports but cannot write. Postings can't be edited, only reversed, and lock dates close past periods.
Because LedgerMCP is our own product, treat this as a disclosure, not a neutral review. It fits freelancers and small businesses starting fresh books, not companies with years of history in QuickBooks or Xero. More detail is in our LedgerMCP server profile and client spotlight.
Pricing
Neither Intuit nor Xero lists a separate charge for MCP on the pages checked. You pay for the accounting plan. US prices on 28 October 2026:
| Plan tier | QuickBooks Online (pricing) | Xero US (pricing) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free $0/month, 1 user | Not offered |
| Entry | Simple Start $38/month | Early $27/month (20 invoices, 5 bills) |
| Middle | Essentials $85/month | Growing $59/month |
| Upper | Plus $140/month | Established $97/month |
| Top | Advanced $340/month | Not offered |
These are regular prices. QuickBooks showed 50% off for 3 months, and Xero showed 90% off for 6 months for new US customers, with an offer end date of 2 November 2026. Check both pages before you buy.
LedgerMCP's pricing page lists Free at $0 with unlimited books and your own AI over MCP. Paid plans add live bank feeds: Starter $9, Growth $39 and Scale $249 per month.
Security and admin controls
| Control | QuickBooks | Xero |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted access level | Read and write with confirmation | Read-only |
| Delete protection | Confirmation before deletes | No delete tools in the hosted connector |
| Local read-only mode | Disable write, update and delete tools | Limit scopes |
| Local credentials | Client secret and rotating refresh token in .env | Client ID and secret, or bearer token |
| Training and storage | Not used to train Claude | Not stored between sessions |
Accounting writes are hard to unwind. Start with read access, keep invoice sending behind a human check, and protect any local .env file like a password. Our MCP for accounting guide covers the rest.
Which to choose
- Pick QuickBooks if you use QuickBooks Online and want Claude to draft, send and chase invoices with confirmation steps.
- Pick Xero if you use Xero and mainly want reporting answers with no risk of edits.
- Pick Xero's local server if you need payroll timesheet help in New Zealand or the UK.
- Consider LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) if you are starting new books and want an AI to do the bookkeeping under read-only keys, reversals and lock dates.
- Stay put if you are happy with your ledger: both QuickBooks and Xero now have official MCP routes.

Frequently asked questions
Can Claude create invoices in Xero?
Not through the hosted connector, which Claude's listing describes as read-only. Xero's open-source local server has create-invoice and update-invoice tools, but it needs a Xero developer setup.
Does the QuickBooks MCP connector cost extra?
Intuit's pages checked list no separate MCP fee. Live data needs an active QuickBooks or Intuit Enterprise Suite subscription, and you can use the connector without one by supplying your own data.
Which is safer for a first AI connection?
Xero's hosted connector is read-only, so it cannot change your books. QuickBooks' hosted connector can write but asks for confirmation, and its local server can be run read-only with three settings.
Is LedgerMCP a replacement for QuickBooks or Xero?
LedgerMCP (built by eSEOspace) is a separate ledger designed for an AI to keep the books. It suits new or simple books. If your accountant and history are in QuickBooks or Xero, their official MCP routes are usually the better fit.
