Shopify Collabs, Collective and Audiences Explained
Shopify Collabs, Collective and Audiences Explained

Shopify Collabs, Shopify Collective and Shopify Audiences are three free Shopify-built apps that help you grow beyond your own store's traffic, and they're easy to confuse. In one line each: Collabs runs affiliate and creator programs, Collective lets Shopify stores sell each other's products (one acts as supplier, the other as retailer), and Audiences builds ad-targeting lists from Shopify's commerce data for Plus stores in the US and Canada.
They solve different problems. Collabs brings in sales through people with an audience. Collective adds products (if you're a retailer) or new sales outlets (if you're a brand) without holding extra inventory or signing up new wholesale accounts. Audiences makes your paid ads more efficient. Who can use each one also differs: Collabs is open to most plans, Collective depends on country, currency and Shopify Payments, and Audiences is Plus only.
This guide explains how each works as of October 2026, what it costs, who's eligible, and which kinds of stores get the most from it. All three are still live. You may read that Shopify Audiences was discontinued; it wasn't.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify Collabs is a free affiliate and creator app available on all plans except Starter and Retail, with a 2.9% processing fee on automatic commission payments.
- Shopify Collective connects supplier and retailer stores; it's free, the supplier ships the order, and Shopify says retailer margins typically range from 20% to 50%.
- Collective requires Shopify Payments with active payouts, and both stores must be in the same supported country and currency.
- Shopify Audiences is free but limited to Plus stores based in the US or Canada that use Shopify Payments.
- Collective and Audiences both require Shopify Network Intelligence to be turned on in your privacy settings.

Shopify Collabs: affiliate and creator marketing
Shopify describes Collabs as a tool that "connects you with creators and influencers for affiliate and creator-led marketing." It runs inside your Shopify admin, so commissions are tied to real Shopify orders rather than an outside tracking pixel.
How it works
- Recruit creators: publish a custom affiliate application page, invite creators directly with personalized offers, or switch on an open access program so creators already on Collabs can promote you.
- Gift products: send and track gifts through Shopify, so seeding products to creators doesn't require manual draft orders.
- Track sales: each approved creator gets affiliate links and discount codes, and Collabs attributes orders through them.
- Pay commission: commissions are paid automatically through your Shopify bill and show as a separate line called "Shopify Collabs Commission." The App Store listing says a 2.9% commission processing fee on automatic payments may apply.
Eligibility
Collabs is available on all Shopify plans except Starter and Retail, and Shopify says there's no minimum sales requirement. The open access program is available to every brand, but only creators from the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada can currently join it. The listing shows integrations with Instagram, YouTube, Shopify Flow, Klaviyo and Yotpo among others.
Who it fits
- Brands with visual, giftable products (beauty, fashion, fitness, home, food) where creator content sells.
- Stores that already get organic mentions and want to turn them into a tracked, paid program.
- Small teams that don't want a separate affiliate platform with its own monthly fee.
It fits less well if you need advanced affiliate features such as multi-tier commissions across networks or very complex payout rules; dedicated affiliate apps may be a better match there. Whatever tool you use, be clear with creators about disclosure rules for sponsored content.
Shopify Collective: selling each other's products
Collective connects Shopify stores as suppliers and retailers. A retailer imports a supplier's products into its own store, sells them at its own retail price, and the supplier ships directly to the customer. Shopify calls it "a simple way for Shopify stores to connect and sell each other's products, all inside Shopify."
How it works for retailers
- Import products from public price lists, request pricing from brands, or invite your existing suppliers to connect.
- You buy at the supplier's discounted cost price and sell at your retail price. Shopify says margins "vary by supplier, but typically can range from 20% to 50%."
- When an order comes in, it's forwarded automatically to the supplier, who ships it. Tracking syncs back to your store and triggers your normal shipping notifications.
- Product details, pricing and inventory sync in real time, so you're not selling stock the supplier doesn't have.
How it works for suppliers
- You set up price lists with discounted cost prices for retailers.
- When a retailer sells your product, the order appears in your admin and you fulfill it to the end customer.
- You reach new customers through other stores without opening wholesale accounts or shipping inventory to retailers up front.
Requirements
Shopify says Collective is "free to use for all stores that are in a supported country and using a supported currency." The Help Center lists these requirements:
- An active Shopify plan (the Pause and Build plan can't use the Collective sales channel).
- Shopify Payments set up, with active payouts, and a payout currency that matches your store currency.
- Shopify Network Intelligence turned on.
- Stores in Canada, the UK or the EU must use Shopify Tax, Basic Tax or a third-party tax app, and add their GST/HST or VAT number.
- To connect, supplier and retailer must be in the same country and use the same currency.
Digital products and gift cards aren't supported. The App Store listing names sourcing locations in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the US; Australia was added in the Spring '26 Edition (17 June 2026). Check the current list in the Help Center before you plan around a specific country.
Who it fits
- Retailers who want to widen a curated catalog (for example, a home store adding complementary candles or textiles) without buying stock up front.
- Brands that want more points of sale and can reliably fulfill orders shipped under someone else's storefront.
The trade-off for retailers is control: you depend on the supplier's stock, shipping speed and returns handling, and your customers will blame you if a supplier is slow. Vet suppliers the way you'd vet a wholesale partner. Some reviewers on the listing ask for stronger enforcement against suppliers who don't follow return or tracking rules, which is a reasonable thing to plan for.
Shopify Audiences: better ad targeting for Plus
Shopify Audiences "helps you to find new customers by generating custom audiences for advertising platforms," according to the Help Center. It builds lists of shoppers in the US and Canada who are likely to buy from your store, based on commerce signals across Shopify, and exports them automatically to your ad accounts.
Requirements
- Shopify Plus plan. The pricing page lists "Optimize ads with Shopify Audiences" under "Just for Plus."
- Store based in the United States or Canada.
- Shopify Payments in use.
- Shopify Network Intelligence turned on.
Where audiences go
The App Store listing names Meta, Google, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat and Criteo. Audiences are transmitted securely and can't be downloaded from the ad platform; Shopify says the raw data is used to match the platform's records and then deleted. The app also offers performance benchmarks against similar stores.
Shopify's listing claims "up to 2x more retargeting conversions for every retargeting dollar spent" and customer acquisition costs cut "by up to 50%." Those are Shopify's own marketing figures, stated as upper bounds. Run Audiences as a separate ad set against your existing targeting so you can measure the effect on your own account.
Who it fits
- Plus brands in the US or Canada spending meaningfully on paid social and search, where small efficiency gains are worth the setup.
- Stores whose own customer lists are too small to build strong lookalike audiences.
It's not an option for non-Plus stores or for brands based outside the US and Canada. For those stores, Shop Campaigns (Shopify's pay-per-conversion ads program) or the native ad platform tools are the alternatives. Our Shopify Plus guide covers what else is exclusive to Plus.
Shopify Network Intelligence: the shared requirement
Collective and Audiences both depend on Shopify Network Intelligence, a privacy setting that lets Shopify use aggregated data across stores to power these features. If either app says you're not eligible, check this setting first. Turning it on is a business decision: review Shopify's description of what it shares, and make sure your own privacy policy reflects it.
Choosing between them
| If your goal is... | Look at |
|---|---|
| Sales from creators and affiliates, paid on results | Collabs |
| A bigger catalog without buying inventory | Collective (as a retailer) |
| More points of sale for your brand | Collective (as a supplier) |
| Lower cost per acquisition on paid ads (Plus, US or Canada) | Audiences |
Many brands use more than one. A Plus apparel brand might run Collabs for creator seeding, supply a few retailers through Collective, and feed Audiences into its Meta and Google campaigns. Track each in Shopify Analytics using its own discount codes, UTM tags or sales channel so you can see which actually pays back. Our Google Ads campaign structure guide and TikTok ads guide cover the paid side in more depth.
Conclusion
Collabs, Collective and Audiences are free Shopify-built tools with different jobs: creator sales, shared catalogs and better ad targeting. Collabs is the most widely available. Collective depends on Shopify Payments, country and currency. Audiences is reserved for Plus stores in the US and Canada. Start with the one that matches your biggest growth constraint, measure it separately, and expand from there. Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Collabs free?
Collabs is free to install. Shopify's App Store listing says a 2.9% commission processing fee may apply when commissions are paid automatically, and you pay the commissions you agree with creators.
Was Shopify Audiences discontinued?
No. As of October 2026, Shopify Audiences is live for eligible Plus stores based in the US or Canada that use Shopify Payments. It appears under "Just for Plus" on Shopify's pricing page.
Is Shopify Collective the same as dropshipping?
It works in a similar way, because the supplier ships directly to your customer. The difference is that suppliers are other Shopify brands, inventory and tracking sync inside Shopify, and the whole flow runs through your admin without a separate dropshipping app.
Can I use Shopify Collective without Shopify Payments?
No. Shopify requires Collective stores to complete Shopify Payments setup with active payouts, and the payout currency must match the store currency.
Which creators can join a Collabs open access program?
Any brand can run an open access program, but as of October 2026 only creators from the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada are eligible to join it.
