Shopify Dropshipping in 2026: How It Works, Supplier Apps, Margins and Risks
Shopify Dropshipping in 2026: How It Works, Supplier Apps, Margins and Risks

Dropshipping on Shopify means you sell products you don't stock. A customer orders from your store, the order is passed to a supplier, and the supplier ships directly to the customer. You pay the supplier only after you've made the sale, so you avoid buying inventory up front.
Shopify supports this model well. It has a free native option, Shopify Collective, for sourcing from other Shopify brands, and the Shopify App Store has a whole category of supplier and automation apps that import products, sync stock and forward orders. What Shopify can't do is make the economics easy. Low barriers to entry mean heavy competition, thin margins and a business that often lives or dies on ad costs and supplier reliability.
This guide explains how dropshipping works on Shopify in 2026, how to evaluate supplier apps, what the margin math really looks like, the shipping-time rules you must follow in the US, and the risks most "get rich" tutorials leave out. For other guides in this series, visit the Shopify hub.
Key Takeaways
- Dropshipping removes inventory risk but not business risk: you still own the customer experience, returns, chargebacks and delivery promises.
- Shopify Collective is free and lets you sell products from other Shopify stores, with typical margins Shopify puts at 20% to 50%.
- Most supplier apps charge a monthly fee on top of product and shipping costs, so model the app fee into your margin.
- After product cost, shipping, payment fees and ads, net margins on a typical dropshipped order can be in the single digits.
- US law requires a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, and a delay notice with a cancel option when you can't meet it.
How dropshipping works on Shopify
- You choose a supplier and connect it to your store, usually through an app.
- You import products into Shopify, then edit titles, descriptions, images and prices.
- A customer orders and pays you through Shopify checkout.
- The order is sent to the supplier, automatically or with one click, and you pay the supplier's product and shipping cost.
- The supplier ships to the customer and the tracking number syncs back to the Shopify order.
Your Shopify subscription, payment processing, apps and marketing work exactly as for any other store. Our guide to Shopify pricing plans covers the subscription side. As of October 2026, the Basic plan is $39 a month on monthly billing ($29 a month billed yearly).
Native option: Shopify Collective
Shopify Collective is Shopify's own supplier network. Shopify describes it as "a simple way for Shopify stores to connect and sell each other's products, all inside Shopify." It's free to use for stores in a supported country using a supported currency. When you make a sale, the order is forwarded to the supplier, which fulfills and ships it directly to your customer. Shopify says "there are no upfront inventory costs or commitments," and that margins "vary by supplier, but typically can range from 20% to 50%."
The advantage of Collective is that suppliers are themselves Shopify brands, so product data, inventory and fulfillment status flow through Shopify natively. The limits are a smaller, more curated catalog than the big marketplaces and country and currency eligibility rules. Check the eligibility requirements in the Help Center before you plan around it.
Supplier and automation apps
Most dropshippers use a third-party app that connects to a supplier marketplace (AliExpress, US or EU warehouses, or the app's own sourcing network). These apps typically handle product import, pricing rules, inventory and price sync, order forwarding and tracking sync.
How to evaluate a dropshipping app
- Supplier location and shipping times: where products ship from, and the delivery times suppliers actually achieve, not their best case.
- Pricing model: monthly fee, product-count or order-count limits, and whether some charges are billed outside your Shopify invoice.
- Stock and price sync: how often it updates, so you don't sell items the supplier has run out of.
- Branding: branded invoices or packaging, and whether supplier marketing materials end up in your customer's box.
- Returns handling: where returns go and who pays for return shipping.
- Reviews: read recent reviews and the review count, not just the star average.
Well-known dropshipping apps
The table shows the pricing model each app lists on its Shopify App Store page as of 1 October 2026. It's a neutral overview, not a ranking. Product and shipping costs are always extra.
| App | What it does | Pricing model on its App Store listing |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Collective | Sell products from other Shopify brands; suppliers ship direct | Free for eligible stores |
| DSers | AliExpress and 1688 product import and bulk ordering | Free plan; paid plans $19.90 and $49.90 a month |
| AutoDS | Product import, price and stock monitoring, order management across many suppliers, plus print on demand | From $26.90 a month; 3-day free trial |
| Spocket | Supplier catalog focused on US and EU products, plus AliExpress | Free plan; paid plans $39.99 to $99.99 a month; some charges billed separately from your Shopify invoice |
| Zendrop | Product sourcing and fulfillment, plus print on demand | Free to install; paid plans $29 to $79 a month by number of linked products; some charges billed separately |

The margin math, honestly
Here's an illustrative example of a single order. The product, prices and ad cost are assumptions for the example, not benchmarks. The payment fee uses Shopify Payments' US Basic-plan online rate of 2.9% + 30¢ for a standard card.
| Line | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $39.95 | Free shipping offered to the customer |
| Supplier product cost | -$12.00 | Assumed |
| Supplier shipping | -$5.00 | Assumed |
| Payment processing | -$1.46 | 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, Shopify Payments, US standard card |
| Gross profit after fulfillment | $21.49 | |
| Advertising cost per order | -$15.00 | Assumed; varies widely by product and channel |
| Refunds and returns allowance (5%) | -$2.00 | Assumed |
| Subscription and apps, spread over 100 orders | -$0.69 | $39 Basic plan + $30 of apps per month |
| Net profit per order | $3.80 (about 9.5%) | Before your time and taxes |
Three things change this quickly:
- Ad costs. If your cost to acquire a customer rises from $15 to $20, this order makes a loss.
- Payment setup. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic (1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced). On this order that's another 80¢. Premium cards such as Amex and business cards also cost more (3.5% + 30¢ on Basic). See our guide to Shopify transaction fees.
- Repeat purchases. Margin improves when customers come back without paid ads, which is why product choice, branding and email matter more than the first sale.
Run this calculation for every product before you advertise it. If the numbers only work at an ad cost you've never achieved, the product isn't viable yet.
Shipping times and US law
Long or unpredictable delivery is the biggest source of dropshipping complaints, and it has legal implications. The US Federal Trade Commission's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule requires that:
- You have a "reasonable basis" for any shipping time you state.
- If you don't state a time, you must have a reasonable basis to expect to ship within 30 days.
- If you can't ship on time, you must notify the customer promptly and give them the option to agree to the delay or cancel for a full and prompt refund.
In practice that means showing realistic delivery estimates on product pages, at checkout and in your shipping policy, based on what your supplier actually delivers. "Fast shipping" claims on a product that takes three weeks are a liability, not a marketing tactic. Our Shopify shipping and fulfillment guide covers how to set rates and delivery expectations.
Policies you need to get right
- Shipping policy: processing time, delivery time by region, carriers and what happens with delays.
- Return policy: where items go back to (your address or the supplier's), who pays return shipping, and your window. Never list a return address you don't control without checking the supplier accepts returns there.
- Duties and taxes: if products ship from another country, say whether customers may owe import charges.
- Contact details: a real support email and response time.
Our guide to Shopify store policies covers what each should include.
The real risks of dropshipping
- Quality you never see. Order samples of every product you sell. If you wouldn't keep it, don't sell it.
- Supplier stockouts and price changes. Sync can lag, leaving you with orders you can't fill at the price you charged.
- Chargebacks. Late or poor-quality orders turn into disputes. Shopify Payments charges a $15 chargeback fee in the US, returned if you win.
- Payout holds. Shopify says accounts deemed higher risk can be put on extended payout periods of 5 to 20 business days, which can squeeze cash flow when you're paying suppliers and ad platforms up front.
- Intellectual property. Knockoffs of branded or trademarked products can get your listings, ads or store taken down.
- Thin differentiation. If the same product is sold by hundreds of stores, you compete on ad spend alone.
Making a dropshipping store sustainable
The dropshipping stores that last usually move away from pure arbitrage. They pick a niche, work with a small number of reliable suppliers (often closer to their customers), invest in their own product photography and content, build an email list, and eventually hold some stock of best-sellers or move into private label. Treat dropshipping as a way to test demand cheaply, then build a brand around what sells.
Conclusion
Shopify makes dropshipping technically simple: Collective and a wide range of supplier apps handle import, sync and order forwarding. The hard parts are commercial: realistic margins after ads and fees, honest delivery promises that meet FTC rules, and supplier quality you can stand behind. Run the numbers per product, sample everything and write clear policies before you spend on ads. Frequently asked questions
Is dropshipping allowed on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify offers Shopify Collective for sourcing from other Shopify brands, and the App Store has a dedicated category of dropshipping and supplier apps.
How much does it cost to start dropshipping on Shopify?
At minimum, a Shopify plan (Basic is $39 a month on monthly billing, or $29 a month billed yearly, after the trial offer), any paid supplier app, product samples and a marketing budget. Product and shipping costs are paid per order after the sale.
What profit margin can I expect?
It depends heavily on product and ad costs. In our illustrative example, a $39.95 order left about $3.80 after product, shipping, payment fees, ads, returns and app costs. Shopify says Collective margins typically range from 20% to 50% before your other costs.
Do I have to tell customers how long shipping takes?
You must have a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, and if you state none, US rules assume 30 days. If you can't meet your promise, you must offer the customer the choice to wait or cancel for a full refund.
Is AliExpress dropshipping still viable?
It can work for testing products, but long delivery times and inconsistent quality make it hard to build a brand on. Many sellers test with marketplace suppliers, then move winning products to faster or private-label suppliers.
