This list is part of our best-of MCP lists, within The MCP Guide. Entries are checked against each vendor's own pages; inclusion is editorial and not paid.
The best MCP servers for project management in 2026 are the official, vendor-hosted servers from Asana, monday.com, Linear, Atlassian (Jira), ClickUp, Smartsheet, Wrike and Todoist. Each lets an AI assistant find tasks, create work items and post updates from a chat window. Pick the one that matches the tool your team already uses.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets AI apps such as Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot connect to outside software. In project management, it turns requests like "Create five tasks from these meeting notes" or "What's overdue on the launch project?" into real actions in your tool.
We checked every entry against the vendor's own site or docs on 28 October 2026. We did not test these products.
Key Takeaways
- All eight tools host their own MCP server, so you connect with a URL and a sign-in rather than installing software.
- Linear has the clearest read-only option: a separate
/mcp/readonlyendpoint, or a read-only OAuth scope. - Several vendors meter MCP use through existing limits: monday.com counts each tool call toward the daily API limit, ClickUp sets rate limits by plan, and Atlassian uses Rovo credits.
- Smartsheet requires a Business, Enterprise or Advanced Work Management plan. Most others work on every plan.
- Bulk task creation is the main risk. Keep confirmations on so the AI can't create or close dozens of items unseen.
How we chose
We used the MCP Guide's standard listicle criteria:
- Live and public. The vendor must publish and document its own MCP server. We opened every page on 28 October 2026.
- Clear pricing. Prices come only from official pricing pages.
- Security basics. The docs must describe sign-in, permissions or scopes.
We did not include community servers for tools that already have an official one. The order is not a ranking. For more lists, see the MCP Guide's best-of hub.

1. Asana: work management with a V2 server
What it is. Asana's MCP server lets an AI app work with tasks and projects, such as finding your incomplete tasks due this week. The V2 server lives at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp and "requires authentication with your Asana account." Asana's docs also describe a separate Command MCP Server and setup for coding clients.
Best for: Marketing, operations and cross-functional teams that plan work in Asana.
Pricing: No separate MCP price. Asana's pricing page lists Personal at $0, Starter at $10.99 per user per month billed annually ($13.49 monthly) and Advanced at $24.99 billed annually.
Pros:
- Hosted by Asana with OAuth sign-in.
- Admins can block the MCP client app in Asana app management.
- Documented tool reference and examples.
Cons:
- The older beta server is deprecated, so older setups need moving to V2.
- If your admin has blocked the client app, users can't authorize it.

2. monday.com: boards, docs and dashboards
What it is. monday.com's Platform MCP lets an AI read and build boards, items, docs, dashboards, forms and automations through 60+ tools. It is hosted at https://mcp.monday.com/mcp. monday.com warns that "MCP tool calls are executed as GraphQL API requests and count toward your account's daily API call limit."
Best for: Teams that run projects, CRM-style pipelines or operations on monday.com boards.
Pricing: No separate MCP price. monday.com's pricing page lists Free for up to two seats, Basic at $9, Standard at $12 and Pro at $19 per seat per month, billed annually.
Pros:
- Three auth paths: API token, your own OAuth app, or dynamic client registration.
- Admins approve extra MCP connections beyond pre-approved agents.
- Enterprise managed auth with Okta is documented.
Cons:
- Heavy AI use can eat into the daily API limit that your other integrations share.
- Tools that build automations can change how boards behave, so restrict them.

3. Linear: issue tracking with a real read-only mode
What it is. Linear's MCP server lets an AI find, create and update issues, projects and comments. It uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, or a bearer token or API key. Read-write access is at https://mcp.linear.app/mcp, and https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly "only ever exposes read tools."
Best for: Software and product teams that track work in Linear.
Pricing: No separate MCP price. Linear's pricing page lists Free at $0, Basic at $10 and Business at $16 per user per month billed yearly, and Enterprise on annual billing only.
Pros:
- Two ways to enforce read-only access.
- Linear says a read-scoped token "can't reach write APIs."
- Hosted centrally, so there is nothing to install.
Cons:
- Read-write is the default, so teams must choose read-only on purpose.
- Built for software teams, so non-technical departments may prefer other tools.

4. Atlassian (Jira): Jira, Confluence and more in one connection
What it is. Atlassian's MCP server lets you search and summarize Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Bitbucket, Projects and Goals. Atlassian's examples include "Create five Jira work items from these meeting notes." It respects each user's existing permissions.
Best for: Engineering and IT teams whose work lives in Jira and whose specs live in Confluence.
Pricing: Atlassian says MCP calls consume Rovo credits from the same shared pool as Rovo Chat, Studio and Agents. Jira plans (Free, Standard, Premium and Enterprise) are on Atlassian's Jira pricing page.
Pros:
- One connection reaches tickets and documentation.
- Our profile notes delete and manage tools are off by default.
- OAuth 2.1 or API token sign-in.
Cons:
- Credit use depends on request size and complexity, so costs vary.
- The docs moved to an "Atlassian AI Gateway" section, so older setup links may be stale.

5. ClickUp: tasks, docs, chat and time tracking
What it is. ClickUp's MCP server lets an AI create and update tasks, track time, write docs, post chat messages and search your workspace. ClickUp says it "is available on all plans." Rate limits depend on your plan and on whether you bought the Everything AI add-on.
Best for: Teams that use ClickUp as an all-in-one workspace.
Pricing: No separate MCP price. ClickUp's pricing page lists Free at $0, Core at $9, Business at $17 and Max at $100 per user per month, with Enterprise on request.
Pros:
- Available on every plan.
- OAuth 2.1 with PKCE sign-in.
- Covers time tracking, which many PM servers lack.
Cons:
- ClickUp says limits "may change as we assess usage and costs."
- Broad tools (tasks, docs and chat) mean one connection reaches a lot of data.
Checked against: ClickUp developer docs on 28 October 2026. Full profile: ClickUp MCP server.
6. Smartsheet: sheets, reports and workflows
What it is. The Smartsheet MCP server lets you "interact with your Smartsheet data using natural language," covering sheets, rows, reports and workflows. Smartsheet hosts separate US, EU and Australia servers. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Enterprise Plus and Microsoft 365 Copilot can use OAuth; other tools need an API token.
Best for: PMOs and operations teams that plan in spreadsheet-style grids.
Pricing: The required plan is "Business, Enterprise, or Advanced Work Management." Smartsheet's pricing page lists Business at $19 per member per month billed yearly ($24 monthly), with Enterprise and Advanced Work Management on custom pricing.
Pros:
- Regional servers help with data residency.
- OAuth for the major AI apps.
- Documented setup for many clients, including Codex and Gemini CLI.
Cons:
- Not available on the Pro plan.
- API-token setups give the AI whatever that token's owner can do.

7. Wrike: enterprise projects with admin-owned OAuth
What it is. Wrike MCP "works with Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and other MCP-compatible clients." The v2 server at https://mcp.wrike.com/v2 uses Streamable HTTP. An administrator creates the Wrike OAuth app once, and each user signs in with their own account. Wrike also ships ready-made skills for workflows such as meeting follow-ups.
Best for: Larger organizations and agencies that manage project portfolios in Wrike.
Pricing: No separate MCP price is listed. Wrike's pricing page lists Free at $0, Team at $10 and Business at $25 per user per month billed annually, with Pinnacle and Apex on request.
Pros:
- Actions are limited to what the signed-in Wrike user can do.
- Admin-controlled OAuth app.
- Documented setup for Copilot Studio and Gemini Enterprise.
Cons:
- An admin step is needed before anyone can connect over OAuth.
- No public profile in our guide yet, so check the tool list in Wrike's docs.
Checked against: Wrike developer docs on 28 October 2026.
8. Todoist: open-source server for personal and small-team tasks
What it is. Doist publishes the Todoist MCP server as open source and runs a hosted version at https://ai.todoist.net/mcp. It reads and manages tasks, projects, labels, comments and reminders. OAuth runs in your browser the first time you use a tool.
Best for: Individuals and small teams who manage tasks in Todoist.
Pricing: Free and open source (MIT). Todoist's pricing page lists Beginner at $0, Pro at $5 per month billed yearly ($7 monthly) and Business at $8 per user per month billed yearly.
Pros:
- Open source, so you can inspect the code.
- Hosted or local options.
- A Claude Code plugin is documented for quick setup.
Cons:
- The README describes the project as early stage.
- Built for personal task lists more than complex team projects.
Checked against: Doist's GitHub repository on 28 October 2026. Full profile: Todoist MCP server.
How to choose and roll out
Choose the server for the tool your team already uses. Moving project tools to get a better MCP server rarely makes sense. Then decide who needs write access.
| If you need... | Look at |
|---|---|
| Strict read-only access for most users | Linear's read-only endpoint |
| Tickets plus documentation | Atlassian |
| Low setup for a small team | Todoist, Asana or ClickUp |
| Regional hosting | Smartsheet or Wrike |
A safe rollout looks like this:
- Pilot with status questions. "What's overdue?" and "Summarize this project" are read-only and useful.
- Add task creation next. Keep confirmations on, and review what the AI created after each session.
- Watch shared limits. monday.com's API limit and ClickUp's rate limits are shared with your other integrations.
- Review permissions. The AI acts as the signed-in user, so tidy up project access first. See MCP permissions and approvals.
If your team also needs docs and knowledge-base search, see the best MCP servers for documentation. For no-code bridges to many apps, compare the best MCP integration platforms.

Frequently asked questions
Which project management MCP server is easiest to set up?
Most are hosted, so setup is a URL plus a sign-in. Todoist, Linear and ClickUp document one-step OAuth flows for common AI apps. Wrike and monday.com may need an admin step first.
Can I stop the AI from changing tasks?
Yes, in some tools. Linear has a read-only endpoint and scope. Elsewhere, rely on your AI app's approval prompts and on the user's own permissions in the tool.
Do MCP calls count against API limits?
monday.com says each tool call counts toward the daily API limit. ClickUp sets MCP rate limits by plan and AI add-on. Atlassian uses Rovo credits. Check limits before you automate heavy reporting.
Does Jira need a separate MCP server from Confluence?
No. Atlassian's single MCP server covers Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Bitbucket and more, with access based on each user's permissions.
Can I use these with ChatGPT?
Many vendors document ChatGPT. Smartsheet and Wrike both list it among supported clients. ChatGPT's own support for custom MCP servers depends on your ChatGPT plan, so check your workspace settings.
