What Do AI Visibility Tools Track? Mentions, Citations and More

This article is part of our SEO & AI Visibility Tools: rank trackers, AI visibility trackers and audit tools, with prices checked on vendor pages. Want to know where your site stands? Get a free 20–30 page website audit within 24 hours.

AI visibility tools track how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention your brand, where you appear in the answer, how you are described and which websites the AI cites. They do this by running a fixed list of prompts on each engine, usually every day, and recording the answers.

That makes them different from rank trackers. There is no single "position 3" in an AI answer. Instead, you get a sample of answers and a set of metrics built from it.

Key Takeaways

  • The core metrics are mentions (visibility), position, sentiment and citations. Most tools also show share of voice against competitors.
  • Citations are often the most useful metric, because they show which pages and third-party sites shape the answer.
  • Many tools now also track AI crawler visits and AI referral traffic to your site.
  • Results are a sample from prompts you choose. They are not a full count of what every user sees.
  • A tool measures visibility. It doesn't improve it on its own.

How AI visibility tools collect data

You (or the tool) choose a set of prompts, such as "best family dentist in Austin" or "Peec AI vs Profound." The tool sends each prompt to each selected engine on a schedule and stores every answer.

Coverage varies by plan. For example, Peec AI's plans run prompts daily on three chosen models, from a list that includes ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI. Ahrefs Brand Radar also keeps an index of 525 million+ search-backed prompts, so you can research brands beyond the prompts you picked.

Some tools scrape the consumer interface, and some call the model's API. Elmo says it does both: it scrapes what real users see in popular AI search tools and uses direct API calls for other models. The method matters, because API answers can differ from what a logged-out user sees in the app.

The core metrics

Visibility (mentions)

Visibility is the share of answers that name your brand. Peec AI's documentation describes it as "market share in AI conversations." If your brand appears in 12 of 50 answers, your visibility is 24 percent for that prompt set.

Position

Position measures where you appear among the brands named when you do appear. Being listed first in a "best of" answer is worth more than being sixth. Peec defines position as where you rank "compared with other brands."

Sentiment

Sentiment captures whether the AI describes you positively, neutrally or negatively. Similarweb's AI Brand Visibility tool breaks sentiment down by topic, which helps you spot one weak area (pricing, for example) inside an otherwise positive picture.

Citations and sources

Citations are the web pages an AI answer links to or draws from. Tools show which of your pages get cited, which competitor pages get cited, and which third-party sites (directories, review sites, forums, news) keep appearing.

Peec notes that sources "influence how AI models respond," and it flags cases where your site is cited but your brand isn't named. That gap usually points to a content fix.

Share of voice

Share of voice compares your mentions with competitors' across the same prompts. Ahrefs Brand Radar reports AI share of voice alongside mentions, citations and estimated impressions. Similarweb shows the top 30 brands per topic.

Composite scores

Some tools roll everything into one number. Brand24's AI Visibility module reports a Brand Score that combines presence, position, sentiment and citations. Composite scores are handy for a monthly report, but always check the underlying metrics before acting.

Newer metrics

Beyond answers, many tools now measure how AI systems interact with your website.

MetricWhat it showsExample
AI crawler visitsWhich AI bots fetch your pages, and how oftenPeec lists crawl bot visits per plan; Otterly sells Agent Analytics events
AI referral trafficVisits that arrive from AI assistantsAhrefs lists AI bot and traffic analytics
Prompt volumeEstimated demand for a promptProfound includes Prompt Volumes searches

Crawler data matters because a bot that can't reach your pages can't cite them. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," and recommends allowing it in robots.txt. What AI visibility tools can't tell you

  • What every user sees. AI answers vary by wording, location, history and time. A tool tracks your prompts, not every conversation.
  • Exact clicks from Google's AI features. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in Search Console's overall Web search report, not split out. A tracker shows appearances; Search Console shows clicks.
  • Why the AI chose a competitor. Citations hint at the reason, but the tool won't explain the model's reasoning.
  • How to fix it. Some tools add recommendations, but changing what AI says about you takes content, reviews, citations and technical work.

Google also states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary" beyond normal Search eligibility. In practice, that means classic SEO basics still carry a lot of weight.

A simple tracking checklist

  • Pick 20 to 50 prompts that combine your services, locations and buying questions.
  • Include a few comparison prompts ("X vs Y") and "best" prompts for your category.
  • Track ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews first, then add Gemini and AI Mode.
  • Record visibility, position and the top cited sources for each prompt.
  • Check that OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot can crawl your key pages.
  • Review trends monthly. Ignore single-day swings.
  • Turn the top cited third-party sources into an outreach and listings list.

You can do this by hand in a spreadsheet for a few prompts. Our AI visibility audit guide walks through the manual method. When you are ready for a tool, see our best AI visibility tools for 2026 and the AI visibility tool pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI visibility tools accurate?

They accurately record the answers they collect. But AI answers change from run to run, so treat results as a trend from a sample, not a fixed ranking. Daily tracking over several weeks gives a more reliable picture than a single check.

What is the most important AI visibility metric?

For most businesses, citations. They show which pages and third-party sites the AI trusts for your topic, which tells you where to publish, get listed or earn mentions. Visibility and position tell you whether that work is paying off.

Is AI visibility the same as SEO rankings?

No. Rankings show where a page sits in a list of links. AI visibility shows whether your brand is named or cited inside a generated answer. They overlap, since AI tools often draw on pages that already rank, but you need to measure both.

How do I improve what these tools show?

Fix crawl access, publish clear answers to your buyers' questions, keep business listings consistent and earn mentions on the sites AI already cites. Our GEO and AEO guide covers each step, and our generative engine optimization team can do the work for you.
