Google Ads conversion tracking on Wix
Google Ads conversion tracking on Wix
To track Google Ads conversions on Wix, connect one Google tag in Marketing Integrations, then use Wix's Event Manager to turn form submissions and purchases into Google Ads conversions. Wix calls Event Manager "the recommended starting point for most users", and it needs no code. You paste a conversion label from Google Ads, click a button, and Wix does the wiring.
There are three other routes: importing key events from Google Analytics 4, adding a Wix-supplied code snippet, or building the tags yourself in Google Tag Manager. All four work. The rule that applies to every route is to pick one, because running two at once counts each lead twice.
You need a paid Wix plan and a connected domain before any of this is available. Wix states that marketing integrations require you to "upgrade your site and connect a domain".
Key Takeaways
- Wix documents four routes: Event Manager (no code), import from Google Analytics 4, a custom code snippet, and Google Tag Manager.
- Every route needs a paid plan and a connected domain. Three need a Google tag connected through Marketing Integrations; the Tag Manager route uses the Google Tag Manager integration in its place.
- Wix says to use only one Google tag per site. Google Ads is added as a destination on that tag inside your Google account, not as a second tag on Wix.
- Enhanced conversions for leads work only with the new Wix Forms, and each form field's key must be set correctly before you collect submissions because it can't be changed later.
- With a cookie banner on, Google tags collect data only after a visitor consents, so recorded conversions will be lower than your real lead count.
What you need before you start
Three things have to be in place.
- A paid Wix plan and a connected domain. Free sites can't use marketing integrations. If you're still choosing a plan, our Wix website cost guide covers what each one includes.
- One Google tag connected in Wix. Since October 2024, Google's tag formats (the IDs that start with G-, AW- or GT-) all do the same job, and where the data goes is set inside your Google account as a "destination". Wix replaced its separate Google Analytics and Google Ads tools with a single Google Tag tool that accepts any of those formats. Wix's guidance is direct: "You should only use 1 Google tag." If you already connected Google Analytics, add Google Ads as a destination to that same tag in Google instead of pasting a second ID into Wix. Wix explains the change in its Google Tag unification article.
- A conversion action in Google Ads. This is the item in your Google Ads account that defines what counts as a result, such as "Contact form lead". Google gives you a conversion ID and a conversion label for it.
If your dashboard still shows an old, separate Google Ads Conversions integration, Wix tells site owners to delete it. If you haven't connected Google Analytics yet, start with our guide to adding Google Analytics 4 to Wix.
The four routes compared
| Route | Skill needed | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Event Manager | None | Most small business sites tracking form leads, clicks and purchases | Don't also build the same conversion in Google Tag Manager |
| Import from Google Analytics 4 | Low | Sites that already rely on GA4 and want one set of numbers | Google Analytics and Google Ads must share the same Google login |
| Custom code snippet | Basic coding knowledge helps | Sending a conversion directly without Event Manager | The conversion ID in the snippet must match the tag installed on Wix |
| Google Tag Manager | High | Teams that already manage tags in a container | Wix's data layer works differently from other platforms |
Wix's own summary is in its conversion tracking help article.
Route 1: Event Manager, the no-code option
Event Manager is a Wix tool that scans your site for actions it can track, such as form submissions and button clicks, and lets you attach a Google Ads conversion to any of them.
- In Google Ads, create a conversion action for the result you want to count and copy its Conversion label.
- In your Wix dashboard, go to Marketing Integrations → Event Manager and click Scan Site.
- Review the list of events Wix found. Some, such as page views, are always tracked and can't be deselected.
- Click the event you want to count, for example a form submission. Give the conversion a name if you like and paste the Conversion label.
- Add conditions if you need them. Conditions inside one conversion all have to be true at once. If you want "this form or that form", create a second conversion on the same event.
- Click Save, then Update Tracking, and choose Google Tag (Recommended). Wix applies the change directly.
The other choice at the last step, Google Tag Manager (Advanced), exports a file to import into a Tag Manager container. Wix warns that tracking the same conversion in both places "can cause duplicates, so you must choose one path". After you add pages or buttons, click Rescan Site. Be careful with Clear All Data under Advanced: it removes every selected event and conversion and can't be undone. The full walkthrough is in Wix's Event Manager article.
Route 2: Import conversions from Google Analytics 4
If Google Analytics 4 is already collecting data from your site, you can reuse its events. Wix sends GA4 a generate_lead event for form submissions and a purchase event for completed payments without any setup. You tell GA4 which of those matter, then import them into Google Ads.
- Connect your Google tag in Wix and confirm events are arriving in GA4.
- In GA4, mark the events you care about as key events. Google defines a key event as one "that measures an action that's particularly important to the success of your business". Google's steps are to open Admin, click Events under Data display, find the event and click the star next to it.
- In Google Ads, Wix gives the path as Tools & Settings → Conversions → Add conversion → Import → Google Analytics 4 properties. Choose the events and click Import and continue. Google renames menus, so labels in your account may differ.
Wix calls this "an ideal method for all users" and notes one requirement: the Google Analytics and Google Ads accounts "must have the same login details". Our general guide to Google Ads conversion tracking without a developer covers the Google side of this route in more detail.
Routes 3 and 4: custom code and Google Tag Manager
Wix publishes a short script that listens for a Lead or Purchase event and sends a conversion straight to Google Ads. You add it at Settings → Custom Code → + Add Custom Code with the Code Type set to Marketing, so the cookie banner holds it back until a visitor consents. A Google tag must already be installed through Marketing Integrations, and Wix says "the tag or its destinations should match the conversion ID in your code". The purchase version passes the order value, currency and transaction ID. Wix doesn't support third-party code, so you own the debugging.
Google Tag Manager is the route Wix reserves for "experienced users". It gives the most control, including separate conversions per form and clicks on phone and email links, and it has the most traps, because Wix loads pages without a full browser refresh and standard triggers behave differently. For stores, Wix says not to use the thank-you page method and to use the purchase event instead. The setup is covered in Google Tag Manager on Wix.
Lead conversions and purchase conversions
Wix groups conversions into two types. Lead conversions are "triggered when site visitors submit contact forms, subscribe, or send messages through Wix Chat". Purchase conversions are "triggered when site visitors complete a payment for goods or services".
Set the counting method in Google Ads to match. Google's own guidance is that counting every conversion is "a good choice if you'd like to track and improve your sales", while counting one conversion per ad click fits leads, where you care whether a lead was generated and not how many times the same person submitted. Google explains the setting in its conversion counting help page.
Phone calls need a different setup. See tracking leads and calls from a Wix site.
Enhanced conversions on Wix
Enhanced conversions send Google a scrambled copy of the details a visitor typed into your form, such as an email address, so Google can match the conversion to an ad click more reliably. Google says the feature "uses a secure one-way hashing algorithm called SHA256 on your first party customer data, such as email addresses, before sending to Google". See Google's enhanced conversions overview.
Wix documents enhanced conversions for leads and purchases, set up with either a custom code snippet or Google Tag Manager. Wix says basic coding knowledge helps for the snippet.
The detail that catches people is the field key. For leads, each form field needs a key that starts with a specific name, such as email, phone, first_name or last_name. You set it in the form builder: Edit Form, open the field's Settings, then the Advanced tab. Wix is clear that "the field key cannot be changed later". If you miss it, you have to delete the field and add it again. Wix also states that enhanced conversions currently work "with new Wix forms that trigger a lead event upon form submission", so an older form has to be rebuilt first. The steps are in Wix's enhanced conversions article, and our guide to Wix Forms and the built-in CRM explains the difference between the two form versions.
Sending customer data to an ad platform has privacy implications. This isn't legal advice; check your privacy policy and consent setup with an attorney first.
Consent, and why your numbers look low
If your site shows a cookie banner, Google tags don't collect anything until the visitor accepts the relevant cookies. Wix states the rule for Google Ads this way: "In countries covered by GDPR, Google only tracks visitor sessions where visitors give explicit consent via a cookie banner."
So Google Ads will show fewer conversions than your Wix dashboard shows submissions. That gap is expected. Use the Wix submissions table as your record of how many leads actually arrived. Banner setup and consent mode are covered in cookie consent and privacy on Wix.
How to test without counting twice
- Open your live site in a private browser window and accept all cookies in the banner.
- Submit a test form or place a test order.
- If you use GA4, open Google's DebugView, which Wix recommends because it shows events as they arrive.
- Check the conversion action in Google Ads over the following day, and count what was recorded for your one test. Two means the same conversion is set up through two routes.
The usual causes of double counting are a conversion built in Event Manager and again in Tag Manager, or a GA4 import running next to a direct conversion for the same form. Tracking pasted into an HTML embed element is a different failure: Wix says tags added that way don't work at all.
"Google Ads with Wix" is a different product
Wix also sells its own campaign tool, opened from Google Ads in the site dashboard. Wix creates a new Google Ads account when you launch a campaign, you can't connect an existing account, and campaign data "can only be managed through the Wix dashboard". On pay-as-you-go billing, the bill includes your ad spend plus "a 15% Wix service fee", and the maximum average daily spend is limited to $84 as of October 2026. If you or an agency already run a Google Ads account, keep it in Google and use one of the four tracking routes.
Conclusion
For most Wix sites, the right setup is one Google tag in Marketing Integrations and conversions created in Event Manager, with enhanced conversions added once the basics are confirmed. Whichever you choose, use one route per conversion and test with a real submission. If you'd like the tracking and the campaigns handled together, our search engine marketing team can set it up. Frequently asked questions
Can I track Google Ads conversions on a free Wix site?
No. Wix requires an upgraded site and a connected domain for marketing integrations, and that includes the Google tag and Event Manager.
Do I need a separate Google Ads tag on Wix?
No. Wix says to use only one Google tag. If Google Analytics is already connected, add Google Ads as a destination to that tag inside your Google account.
Why does Google Ads show fewer conversions than my Wix form submissions?
The most common reason is consent. With a cookie banner on, Google tags record a conversion only when the visitor accepted the relevant cookies. Visitors who didn't arrive from an ad are also not counted as ad conversions.
Do enhanced conversions work with old Wix forms?
Wix says enhanced conversions are currently supported with new Wix forms that trigger a lead event on submission. An old form has to be rebuilt in the new form builder, with field keys set before you start collecting leads.
