How to add Google Analytics 4 to Wix

This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

To add Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to a Wix site, go to Marketing Integrations in your site's dashboard, click Connect under Google Tag, click Add Google Tag ID, paste your GA4 Measurement ID (it starts with G-) and click Save. You don't paste any code. Wix then sends page views and a set of business events, such as purchases and form leads, to GA4 automatically.

Two requirements apply. Wix says "you must have a Premium site and a connected domain", and it states plainly that "It is not possible to use Google Analytics with a free Wix site." And there is one rule to follow: use this integration, not a code snippet. Wix's documentation says tracking scripts such as Google Analytics do not work through custom code or the HTML embed element.

The rest of this guide covers the full setup, including two GA4 settings Wix asks you to change, what gets tracked, how cookie consent affects your numbers, and how to confirm data is arriving.

Key Takeaways

  • GA4 connects through Google Tag in Marketing Integrations, on an upgraded site with a connected domain.
  • When you create the GA4 web stream, Wix instructs you to deselect "Page changes based on browser history events" and turn off the Site search toggle.
  • Wix sends events such as page_view, view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase, sign_up and generate_lead with no further configuration.
  • Use one Google tag only. Wix warns against installing Google Tag and Google Tag Manager together, and against adding Google Analytics in more than one place.
  • With a cookie banner active, GA4 only collects data from visitors who consent, so lower numbers after adding a banner are normal.
  • Wix says it typically takes 24 to 48 hours before you can view stats after setup. Google's DebugView shows events in real time for testing.

What you need before you start

  • An upgraded Wix site with your own domain connected. Marketing Integrations requires both. If the domain isn't properly connected yet, fix that first, because Wix's own troubleshooting starts by checking the domain connection.
  • A Google Analytics account you control, signed in with a Google login that belongs to the business, not to a former contractor.
  • A decision about Google Tag Manager. If you plan to manage tags through Google Tag Manager (GTM), connect GA4 there and skip the Google Tag integration. Don't do both. Our guide to Google Tag Manager on Wix explains when GTM is worth it.

The Google Analytics integration applies to the whole site. Wix says that if there is a specific page where you should not use Google Analytics, "you should not use this integration". That is rare, but worth knowing if part of your site handles sensitive information.

Step 1: create the GA4 property and web stream

In Google Analytics, create a property for your website and add a web data stream for your domain. A data stream is GA4's term for one source of data, in this case your website. Wix's setup article, tracking events on your Wix site with a Google Analytics property, asks for two changes while you create the stream:

  1. In the web stream setup, click the Settings icon.
  2. Under Page views, click Show advanced settings.
  3. Deselect Page changes based on browser history events.
  4. Turn off the Site search toggle.
  5. Create the stream and copy the Measurement ID.

These settings are easy to skip, and they matter on Wix. Wix sites are built as single-page applications, which means the browser doesn't fully reload when a visitor moves between pages, and Wix sends its own page_view event each time a page is loaded. Follow Wix's instruction here so that GA4 relies on the events Wix sends.

Step 2: connect the tag in Wix

  1. Go to Marketing Integrations in your site's dashboard.
  2. Under Google Tag, click Connect.
  3. Click Add Google Tag ID.
  4. Paste the Measurement ID. Make sure there are no spaces before it.
  5. Optionally, select the IP Anonymization checkbox.
  6. Click Save.

That is the whole installation. There is no code to add in the editor.

You may see older tutorials that mention a "Google Analytics" tile. Wix replaced its separate Google Analytics and Google Ads tools with a single Google Tag tool after Google unified its tag formats. Google's G-, AW- and GT- IDs now serve the same purpose, and the tool accepts any of them.

What Wix sends to GA4 automatically

Wix says that once you connect an integration, "the events automatically start reporting." As of October 2026, its event tracking by service page lists these for Google Analytics:

EventWhen it firesWix apps that send it
page_viewAny page is loadedAll
view_item_listA list of items is shownWix Stores, Pricing Plans, Wix Bookings, Wix Restaurants
select_itemAn item is selected from a listWix Stores, Pricing Plans, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, Wix Restaurants
view_itemAn item's page is viewedWix Stores, Pricing Plans, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, Wix Restaurants
add_to_cart, remove_from_cartAn item is added to or removed from the cartWix Stores, Wix Restaurants
begin_checkoutCheckout startsWix Stores, Pricing Plans, Wix Bookings, Wix Restaurants, Wix Events
purchaseA payment is completedWix Stores, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, Wix Restaurants, Pricing Plans, Gift Cards, and Wix Forms (payment forms only)
sign_upA visitor signs up for an accountGeneral
generate_leadA lead is generated through a form submission or by starting a chat conversationWix Forms, the mobile Quick Action Bar, a form in chat

For a store, this covers the standard ecommerce funnel from product view to purchase, with no extra tagging. For a service business, generate_lead is the event to care about, because it fires when someone submits a Wix form.

What isn't covered: Wix's list doesn't include events for clicks on ordinary buttons, phone links on desktop, downloads you host elsewhere or third-party widgets. Those need the Wix Event Manager or Google Tag Manager. We cover those options in tracking leads and calls from a Wix site.

Use one Google tag, in one place

Duplicate tags are a common way for a working setup to break. Wix's rules:

  • Only one Google tag. Wix's Google Tag unification article says "You should only use 1 Google tag." If you later need Google Ads on the same site, add Google Ads as a destination to the existing tag inside your Google account. Don't add a second tag in Wix.
  • Not Google Tag and GTM together. Wix warns: "Avoid installing Google Tag and Google Tag Manager together, as they may conflict with each other."
  • Not through the HTML embed. Wix's troubleshooting tells you to check that Google Analytics wasn't added "using the HTML tool". An embed runs inside a frame and can't see the page around it.
  • Not through Custom Code. Wix states that tracking scripts such as Google Analytics "do not work through custom code".

If a previous designer set up tracking, look in all four places before adding anything: Marketing Integrations, GTM, Custom Code under Settings, and HTML embeds on the pages.

This catches many site owners out. With a cookie banner active, Wix "automatically disables the usage of non-essential cookies and scripts until your visitor provides consent". Google Analytics collects data only after a visitor approves the relevant cookies. Wix describes a drop in GA numbers after adding a banner as normal.

The opposite case matters too. Wix states: "if you don't have a cookie banner on your site and a site visitor comes from a country that requires consent (e.g. those covered by GDPR) no data is sent to Google Analytics." So without a banner, visitors from those countries won't appear in GA4.

Wix's current banner is provided with Usercentrics and, according to Wix, is supported for Google Consent Mode v2, which is Google's framework for passing a visitor's consent choices to Google tags. Whether you need a banner, and what it must say, depends on where your visitors are and which laws apply to you. That is a legal question, and this article is not legal advice. Wix itself suggests consulting a local attorney about Google Analytics and privacy law. Our guide to cookie consent and privacy on Wix explains what the banner does.

Step 3: verify that data is arriving

Wix says "Typically it takes 24-48 hours before you can view your stats after setting up your tracking code." You don't have to wait that long to know whether it works.

  1. Open your live site in a private or incognito window. If you have a cookie banner, accept all cookies, or nothing will be sent.
  2. In Google Analytics, open the real-time report and look for your visit.
  3. For event-level detail, use DebugView. Google's DebugView documentation places it under Admin, in the Data display section, and explains how to switch on debug mode for your own browser with Google Tag Assistant.
  4. Click through a few pages and check that each one produces a single page_view.
  5. Submit a test form and look for generate_lead. On a store, add a product to the cart and look for add_to_cart.

Two page_view events per page suggests something is installed twice. No events at all usually points to the domain, the consent banner or the ID.

If GA4 shows no data

Wix's Google Analytics troubleshooting article gives this order:

  1. Check that the domain is connected properly, using the Wix Domain Assistant.
  2. Make sure Google Analytics wasn't added with the HTML element.
  3. Make sure it isn't added in more than one place, such as GTM and Marketing Integrations.
  4. Use DebugView to watch events in real time.
  5. Check whether a cookie banner is holding back collection until consent.

Add two checks of your own. Confirm the Measurement ID in Wix matches the web stream in the GA4 property you are looking at, since it is easy to end up with two properties. And test from a device that isn't blocking analytics with a browser extension.

If you recently changed the site's domain, check your other tags too. Wix deletes Custom Code snippets when a different domain is assigned to a site, so third-party tools installed that way need to be added again.

Why GA4 and Wix Analytics won't match

Once GA4 is running you will have two sets of numbers, and they will differ. Wix says the most common reasons are cookie consent and the different methods each tool uses to filter bot traffic. There are structural differences as well:

  • Wix Analytics reads sales from Wix's own order data. GA4 relies on events from the visitor's browser, which can be lost to blockers or network problems.
  • Wix Analytics does not show canceled orders and does show free orders. GA shows canceled orders and does not show free ones.
  • Google's "last 7 days" ends yesterday. Wix's includes today.
  • Time zone settings can differ between the two.

Treat Wix's order data as the record of what you sold, and GA4 as the tool for understanding where visitors came from and what they did. More on the built-in reports is in Wix Analytics: the reports worth using.

What to set up next

  • Mark your key events. In GA4, mark generate_lead or purchase as key events so they appear in reports as conversions. Our guide to conversion tracking in GA4 walks through it.
  • Connect Google Ads. If you advertise, key events can be imported into Google Ads. See Google Ads conversion tracking on Wix.
  • Connect Search Console. It shows the searches that bring people to your site. Our Wix SEO checklist covers the wider setup.

Conclusion

Adding GA4 to Wix takes a few minutes when you use the Google Tag integration: create the web stream with Wix's two settings, paste the Measurement ID and save. The work that protects your data is around the edges: keeping to one tag, understanding what a cookie banner does to your numbers, and testing in DebugView before you rely on the reports. Frequently asked questions

Can I use Google Analytics on a free Wix site?

No. Wix states that it is not possible to use Google Analytics with a free Wix site. You need a Premium site and a connected domain.

Where do I paste the GA4 code in Wix?

You don't paste code. Enter the Measurement ID under Google Tag in Marketing Integrations. Wix says Google Analytics does not work through Custom Code or the HTML embed element.

Does Wix track ecommerce in GA4 automatically?

Yes. With Google Tag connected, Wix sends events including view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout and purchase from Wix Stores and other Wix business apps, with no extra configuration.

Why did my GA4 traffic drop after I added a cookie banner?

Because Google Analytics only collects data from visitors who consent once a banner is active. Wix describes the drop as normal. Your real visitor numbers have probably not changed.

How long until I see data in GA4?

Wix says it typically takes 24 to 48 hours before you can view stats. The real-time report and DebugView in GA4 show activity sooner, which makes them the right tools for testing.

Does GA4 track the mobile version of my Wix site?

Yes. Wix says the desktop and mobile versions are different viewing modes of the same site and share the same domain, so the same tag covers both.
