WordPress vs Wix: Which Platform Fits Your Business in 2026?

By: Irina Shvaya | October 1, 2026
This guide is part of our WordPress resource hub: costs and hosting, the block editor, plugins, SEO and speed, security, maintenance, WooCommerce, development, comparisons and migrations.

WordPress and Wix both let a business owner publish a professional website without writing code, but they are built on opposite ideas. Wix is an all-in-one, hosted product: you pay one subscription and Wix runs the servers, security, updates and editor. Self-hosted WordPress is free, open-source software that you install on hosting you choose, then extend with themes and plugins.

The short answer: Wix is usually the faster, lower-effort choice for a small brochure site, a local service business or a simple store when nobody on the team wants to manage software. WordPress is usually the better choice when you need deep customization, a large content library, complex SEO work, unusual integrations, or the freedom to move your site to another host later.

The deciding factor for many owners is control. Wix states plainly that a Wix site must run on Wix's servers and cannot be hosted elsewhere. WordPress sites can be exported, moved between hosts and edited at the code level. Neither approach is wrong, but you should choose it on purpose.

This guide compares the two on cost, editing, SEO, ecommerce, maintenance and portability, using prices and features checked on each platform's own site as of October 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Wix is a hosted website builder with four premium plans (Light, Core, Business and Business Elite) listed from $17 to $159 a month on yearly billing in the US as of October 2026.
  • Self-hosted WordPress software is free, so your costs are hosting, a domain, any premium themes or plugins, and the time or help needed to maintain it.
  • Wix now has three building experiences: the classic Wix Editor, Wix Studio for agencies and designers, and Wix Harmony, its AI-assisted builder announced in January 2026.
  • A Wix site cannot be exported to another host, and Wix blog posts cannot be exported to other platforms, while a WordPress site can be moved anywhere that runs PHP and MySQL.
  • Both platforms handle core SEO tasks such as titles, meta descriptions, 301 redirects and robots.txt; WordPress gives more room for custom technical SEO.
  • Choose Wix for speed and simplicity, and WordPress for control, scale and long-term flexibility.

The basic difference: hosted product vs open-source software

Wix is software as a service. You never install anything, and Wix handles hosting, security patches, uptime and feature releases. Features come from Wix itself or from apps in the Wix App Market. The trade-off is that you work inside the limits Wix sets, and your site depends on Wix's infrastructure to operate.

WordPress (the self-hosted version from WordPress.org) is open-source software licensed under the GPL. As of October 2026 the current release is WordPress 7.1.2, and the WordPress.org directory lists more than 70,000 free plugins and roughly 8,700 free themes. You pick a host, install WordPress, and own the full stack: files, database and code. That freedom comes with responsibility for updates, backups and security.

WordPress.com is a third option that sits between the two. It is a hosted WordPress service from Automattic, and since April 2026 plugins are available on every paid WordPress.com plan, starting with Personal. If you like the idea of WordPress but not the upkeep, it is worth a look. Our WordPress hub and the what is WordPress guide explain the .com vs .org split in detail.

Market position as of October 2026

According to W3Techs' survey on 1 October 2026, WordPress runs 40.2% of all websites and 58.7% of sites whose content management system W3Techs can detect. Wix runs 4.2% of all websites in the same survey. WordPress's share has slipped from about 43% in late 2025. Market share does not make either platform right for you, but it does affect how easy it is to find developers, tutorials and integrations.

Pricing compared

Wix lists four premium plans on its pricing page, plus a free plan. Wix notes that prices vary by location and that displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions paid in full. Monthly billing and other terms are available at different prices.

Wix planUS price (yearly billing, per month)StorageAccept payments / ecommerceSite collaborators
Light$172 GBNot included2
Core$2950 GBYes, basic eCommerce5
Business$39100 GBYes, standard eCommerce10
Business Elite$159UnlimitedYes, advanced eCommerce100

All four premium plans include a custom domain connection, hosting, AI creation tools, 24/7 customer care and a free domain for the first year. Larger organizations can talk to Wix about an Enterprise plan. Wix Studio, aimed at agencies and freelancers, has its own separate plans.

WordPress has no single price. A realistic budget includes:

  • Hosting: shared WordPress hosting starts around $3 a month on promotional multi-year terms (for example, SiteGround's StartUp plan is $2.99 a month and renews at $17.99), while managed WordPress hosting such as WP Engine starts at $28 a month billed annually as of October 2026.
  • Domain: usually bought separately and renewed every year.
  • Premium themes and plugins: optional, but many business sites pay for at least an SEO, backup, forms or security product. Typical yearly licenses run from about $50 to a few hundred dollars each.
  • Maintenance: your own time, or a developer or maintenance service.

A lean WordPress site can cost less per year than Wix Core, while a well-maintained business site with managed hosting and premium plugins often costs more. Our WordPress cost guide breaks this down by site type.

Editing and design: Wix Editor, Wix Studio and Wix Harmony vs the block editor

Wix's three builders

Wix offers more than one way to build a site, and the choice matters because you cannot always switch later.

  • Wix Editor: the classic drag-and-drop editor with free placement of elements and a large template library.
  • Wix Studio: Wix describes it as "the website building platform for designers, developers, and marketers." It adds custom breakpoints for mobile, tablet and desktop, custom CSS, and coding in JavaScript in the browser or locally.
  • Wix Harmony: announced on 21 January 2026, Harmony combines natural-language AI building (through an AI agent called Aria) with drag-and-drop editing. According to Wix's help center, it is not currently possible to migrate an existing site from the Wix Editor to Harmony, and Harmony is still adding support for some Wix apps such as CMS and Multilingual. Check the Harmony vs Wix Editor comparison before you start a new site.

For developers, Wix supports custom JavaScript through Velo, its development platform, which can call Wix APIs on the front end and the back end.

WordPress's block editor and builders

WordPress uses the block editor (Gutenberg) for content and, with block themes, the Site Editor for headers, footers and templates. Recent releases have closed much of the gap with hosted builders: WordPress 7.0 added hide-or-show controls per device and block-level custom CSS, and WordPress 7.1 added responsive styling per screen size without custom CSS. Many sites also use a page builder plugin such as Elementor, which W3Techs detects on 31.5% of WordPress sites.

The practical difference: Wix gives a consistent, polished editing experience out of the box. WordPress gives you a choice of editing experiences, which is powerful but means quality depends on the theme, builder and plugins you pick.

SEO and performance

Older articles often claim Wix is bad for SEO. That is outdated. Wix's SEO and GEO dashboard lets you set titles and meta descriptions, manage 301 redirects in a URL Redirect Manager, edit robots.txt, add robots meta tags and block AI crawlers. A well-built Wix site can rank.

WordPress's advantage is depth rather than basics. Because you control the server, theme code and database, you can fine-tune URL structures, structured data, internal linking at scale, server-level caching and image handling. WordPress 7.1 moved image compression and thumbnail generation into the browser and added native AVIF and HEIC support. Plugins such as Yoast SEO (10+ million active installs) and Rank Math (4+ million) add schema, sitemaps and content analysis.

Performance on Wix is largely in Wix's hands: you cannot change hosts or server configuration. Performance on WordPress depends on your host, theme and plugin choices, so it can be faster or slower than Wix. For the technical limits that matter most on Wix, see our Wix technical SEO limits guide.

Ecommerce

Wix includes ecommerce on Core, Business and Business Elite, with the depth of features increasing by tier. The Light plan does not include accepting payments. Wix Payments, Wix's own processor, charges 2.9% of the transaction amount plus $0.30 for non-Amex US card payments and 3.7% plus $0.30 for American Express, according to its service fees page as of October 2026.

On WordPress, ecommerce usually means WooCommerce, a free plugin with 7+ million active installs. WooCommerce's own payment service, WooPayments, charges 2.9% + $0.30 for US domestic cards. Extensions for subscriptions, bookings, wholesale pricing and more are sold separately, typically $29 to $299 a year each according to WooCommerce. W3Techs reports WooCommerce on 47.7% of the ecommerce systems it detects.

For a store with a modest catalog and standard needs, Wix is quicker to launch. For complex product logic, custom checkout flows, or tight integration with ERP and inventory systems, WooCommerce gives more control at the cost of more setup.

Portability and lock-in

This is the biggest structural difference. Wix's help center says: "Your site must run on Wix's servers," and explains that its architecture "does not support external hosting." Wix is clear that the content you build belongs to you, but you cannot download the site and run it elsewhere (Wix support).

Some content can come out in pieces:

  • CMS collections can be exported to CSV.
  • Wix Stores physical products can be exported to CSV (up to 5,000 rows per file; digital products are not supported).
  • Blog posts cannot currently be exported to other platforms, according to Wix.

A WordPress site, by contrast, is a set of files and a database you can copy to any compatible host, and its built-in Tools > Export feature produces a standard XML file of your content. If you are moving off Wix, plan the move carefully; our Wix to WordPress migration guide covers rebuilding pages, re-creating blog content and mapping redirects.

Maintenance and security

With Wix, platform security and updates are Wix's job. You still manage user access, passwords and any third-party apps, but there are no core or plugin updates to run.

With self-hosted WordPress, the site owner is responsible. Only the newest WordPress release is actively supported, and Patchstack's 2026 report found 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, 91% of them in plugins and only 6 in core. The lesson is not that WordPress is unsafe; it is that plugin choice and prompt updates matter. Minor core updates install automatically by default, but plugin and theme auto-updates are opt-in per item. Our WordPress security guide lists the routine that keeps most sites safe, and managed WordPress hosting takes much of the work off your plate.

Which should you choose?

Choose Wix if

  • You need a polished site live quickly and nobody wants to manage hosting or updates.
  • Your site is mostly service pages, a gallery, bookings or a small store.
  • You value one vendor, one bill and 24/7 support from the platform itself.
  • You are comfortable that the site stays on Wix for its life.

Choose WordPress if

  • You publish a lot of content or plan to grow into hundreds or thousands of pages.
  • You need custom functionality, specific integrations or a custom data model.
  • Technical SEO, performance tuning or multilingual needs are central to your growth plan.
  • You want to own your files and be free to change hosts or developers.

If you are also weighing other hosted builders, compare WordPress vs Squarespace and WordPress vs Webflow.

Conclusion

Wix has matured into a capable platform with solid SEO tools, built-in ecommerce and, with Harmony, AI-assisted building. Its main costs are flexibility and portability. WordPress asks more of you in setup and upkeep, but it rewards that effort with control over code, hosting, data and growth. Match the platform to how much control you need over the next five years, not just how fast you want to launch this month. If you choose WordPress and want help with the upkeep, eSEOspace offers website maintenance services for WordPress sites.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix cheaper than WordPress?

It depends on the site. Wix plans run from $17 to $159 a month on yearly billing in the US as of October 2026, with hosting and security included. A basic WordPress site on promotional shared hosting can cost less, but managed hosting, premium plugins and maintenance can make WordPress more expensive. Compare total yearly cost, including renewal prices and your time.

Can I move my Wix site to WordPress?

Yes, but not by exporting it. Wix does not support exporting a site to another host, and blog posts cannot be exported to other platforms. You rebuild the design in WordPress, move content (CMS collections and store products can be exported to CSV), and set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones.

Is Wix bad for SEO?

No. Wix lets you edit titles and meta descriptions, create 301 redirects, edit robots.txt and manage robots meta tags. WordPress offers more control over code, server configuration and structured data, which matters most for large or technically demanding sites.

What is Wix Harmony?

Wix Harmony is Wix's AI-assisted website builder, announced on 21 January 2026. It combines natural-language building through an AI agent called Aria with drag-and-drop editing. Existing Wix Editor sites cannot currently be migrated into Harmony.

Which is better for an online store?

Wix suits smaller stores that want a fast, all-in-one setup on the Core plan or above. WooCommerce on WordPress suits stores that need custom product logic, specific integrations or full control over checkout and data, and both offer card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 for standard US cards through their own payment services.
