Overview

You cannot buy your way in front of anyone

Adult-use cannabis is refused by Google Ads, by Meta, by most programmatic networks and by most mainstream affiliate programmes. Hemp-derived CBD gets a narrow, certification-gated exception in a handful of states and nothing like open access. Carriers reject a large share of cannabis SMS campaigns at the 10DLC registration stage, and app stores treat ordering apps unevenly. That leaves your website, your email list and organic search doing the work that other retailers split across six channels, which is why SEO is not a supplement to your marketing in this category. It is the marketing.

The second problem is that most dispensary sites have almost nothing for search engines to read. The menu is an embed from Dutchie, Jane, Weedmaps or your POS, so every strain name, category, brand and price sits inside an iframe on someone else's domain. The pages you actually own are a homepage, a contact page and a stock hero image of a cannabis leaf. Our website design work here starts from that gap: the site has to carry real content of its own, because the part customers use most is not yours to rank with.

Two very different people arrive. A customer three minutes from your door wants to know if you are open, whether the thing they saw yesterday is still in stock, whether you take a card, and whether they need a medical card. A wholesale buyer at another licensee wants your license number and state, current COAs by batch, minimums, lead times and whether you can hold a consistent cut across a run. Those are different sites wearing one brand.

What makes this hard

What makes cannabis and CBD sites hard to get right

The hard parts here are structural, not cosmetic. Delivery zones follow license boundaries rather than drive time, some jurisdictions cap how far you may deliver, and a storefront that cannot legally serve the town next door still shows up in its results, which makes local SEO a more careful exercise than pinning an address on a map.

🔞

The age gate can hide the entire site

Most age verification is bolted on as a hard interstitial that redirects, blocks rendering or sets a cookie before any content exists. Built that way, the gate is often all a crawler ever sees, and returning customers get stopped on every visit.

Your menu lives on someone else's domain

An embedded menu is a transaction tool, not content. Strain pages, brand pages, category text and product detail inside that frame do nothing for the site wrapping it, and a heavy embed often becomes the slowest thing on the page.

The payment question decides whether they drive over

Banking access is inconsistent, debit workarounds get shut off with little notice, and hemp merchant accounts are dropped by mainstream processors regularly. If the site does not say plainly what you accept today, people call a competitor instead of calling you.

📋

What you may say changes at the state line

FDA rules bar disease and treatment claims for CBD, state advertising rules restrict imagery that could appeal to anyone under 21 and often set audience composition requirements, and delta-8 and THCA products that are legal in one state are banned in the next. The same paragraph can be compliant in one market and a violation in another.

Demand spikes on dates the rest of retail ignores

The 20th of April, Green Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the 10th of July and the outdoor harvest window in October move more volume than any general retail calendar. A site that is slow or out of date on those days loses the traffic you spent the year earning.

The lab result is the product page

Potency, terpene profile, pesticide and heavy metal screening and batch identity are what a careful buyer checks before anything else. When COAs are a folder of scanned PDFs with filenames like batch3final, they persuade nobody and are invisible to search.

How we work

How we build for this vertical

We split the site along the two ways you sell. The retail path gets store pages that state hours, delivery or pickup zones, ID and medical card requirements, what payment you accept right now, and a deals page your team can change without a developer. The wholesale path gets a section behind license verification with line sheets, minimums, lead times, packaging and white label options, and a request form that captures license number and state up front so your sales team is not chasing it later.

The menu stays where it works and stops being the whole site. We keep the ordering embed for what it is good at and build indexable pages around it: category and product-type explainers, brand pages, effect and format guidance written within your state's rules, and location pages that deep link into the right part of the menu. Age verification is rebuilt as an overlay above content that has already rendered, so the page still exists underneath and a returning customer is not gated every time. For hemp and CBD companies shipping direct to consumers, our ecommerce build handles the parts that break other stores: state-level shipping restrictions enforced at checkout rather than in a disclaimer, age checks in the purchase flow, batch-level COA links on every product, and a stack that will not collapse when a processor drops you.

Cultivators and processors get treated as the production businesses they are. Genetics and phenotype selection, room and cycle capacity, cure and trim standards, extraction method, testing cadence and traceability under state seed-to-sale reporting are the content that convinces a buyer, and it has more in common with the work we do for agriculture and growing operations than with retail marketing. Every claim on the site gets checked against FDA limits and your state's advertising rules before it goes live.

What's included

What we build for cannabis, hemp and CBD companies

Each of these exists because a licensed operator needed it, not because it rounded out a list.

Age verification built as an overlay on rendered content, so the page is still readable to search engines and returning visitors are not gated on every session
Menu integration with Dutchie, Jane, Weedmaps or your POS, wrapped in category, brand and location pages that belong to you
Store pages carrying hours, delivery and pickup zones, ID and medical card requirements, and the payment methods you accept today
COA and lab result libraries organised by batch and product, linked from the product page and readable without downloading anything
License-verified wholesale sections with line sheets, minimums, lead times, white label options and a form that captures license number and state
Direct-to-consumer hemp stores with state-level shipping rules enforced at checkout and age verification inside the purchase flow
Copy and imagery reviewed against FDA claim limits and your state advertising rules before publication
Deals, drop and event pages your staff can update the week of a major cannabis holiday without touching code

The process

How the project runs

Cannabis projects stall on compliance sign-off and on menu access, so we sequence the work to clear both early.

1

Find out what the menu is hiding

We check what on your current site is actually indexable, how the age gate behaves for a first-time visitor and a crawler, what the embed costs you in load time, and whether directory listings outrank your own site for your own store name.

2

Separate retail from wholesale

We map the pre-visit customer journey and the licensee sourcing journey separately, then decide what belongs in public, what belongs behind license verification, and what each side needs before they will act.

3

Design and build

Store and delivery pages, category and brand content around the menu, a COA library tied to batches, a wholesale section with real gating, and an age gate that no longer suppresses the site.

4

Compliance review before launch

Every claim, image and offer gets read against FDA limits on CBD claims and the advertising rules in the states you operate in. It is far cheaper to change a sentence now than to answer for it later.

5

Search, local and ongoing upkeep

Location profiles and service areas set to the boundaries you can legally serve, page targeting for how customers and buyers actually search, and maintenance through menu changes, license renewals, new SKUs and rule changes.

FAQ

Questions dispensaries and cannabis brands ask

Can we advertise on Google or Meta at all?
Not for adult-use cannabis. Some hemp-derived CBD products, mainly topicals, can be advertised in certain states under a certification process, and the approved list is narrow and changes. Plan on organic search, local visibility, email and your own audience carrying acquisition, and treat any paid access you do get as a bonus rather than the plan.
Our menu is an embed. Does that content help us rank?
Almost never, because it is not on your domain. The strain names, categories and prices inside that frame are working for the menu platform, not for you. The fix is not to rip the menu out but to build your own category, brand, format and location pages around it, so there is something on the site a search engine can read and a customer can land on.
Weedmaps and Leafly outrank us for our own store name. Why?
Those directories have far more pages, links and reviews pointing at them, and many dispensary sites give search engines a homepage and little else. You will not out-publish them everywhere, but you can own your own name, your neighbourhoods, your delivery towns and your product categories with real pages, a complete and accurate business profile, and reviews you actively collect.
We sell hemp products online. Can we ship everywhere?
No, and a disclaimer in the footer is not a control. Several states restrict or ban intoxicating hemp products including delta-8 and high-THCA flower, some require additional labelling or age checks, and the definitions keep moving with each legislative session. The store should enforce those rules at checkout by destination, and the rule set needs an owner who updates it.
What are we allowed to say about how our CBD products work?
You cannot claim a product treats, prevents or cures a condition. That rules out most of what competitors put on their sites and what customers ask you directly. What you can do is describe the product accurately, publish the batch COA, explain cannabinoid and terpene content, sourcing and extraction, and let the testing do the persuading. That approach also survives a change of ownership at the FDA or in your state.
We make edibles, drinks and topicals. Does that change the site?
Yes, because each format brings a different set of rules and a different buyer. Infused beverage and edible brands share a lot of ground with the work we do for food and beverage companies, and CBD topicals and skincare lines look much like the sites we build for beauty and cosmetics brands, with cannabis-specific claim limits layered on top. The industries we work in page covers the full range if your business spans several.
