Why your Wix site is slow, and how to fix it
Why your Wix site is slow, and how to fix it

A slow Wix site is usually slow because of what sits at the top of the page. A video background, a slideshow, a large animated header or several third-party widgets all have to load before a visitor sees anything useful. The most effective fix is to make the first screen light: text, a button and one static image, with the heavy elements moved further down or onto other pages.
Before you change anything, measure. Go to Site Speed in your site's dashboard. It shows how real visitors experience your site and which pages are the slowest, so you fix the pages that matter and can tell afterward whether it worked.
Some things are outside your control on Wix, including Wix's own JavaScript and its hosting setup. This guide separates what you can change from what you can't, so you don't spend an afternoon chasing a warning nobody on Wix can clear.
Key Takeaways
- The Site Speed dashboard has two sections: Real visitor experience, based on actual visits, and Google PageSpeed simulation, a lab test scored from 1 to 100.
- Site speed data appears only for sites with 10 or more site sessions in the last 7 days.
- Wix says a low lab score "doesn't mean your site is underperforming for real visitors." Judge your site by the real visitor data first.
- Wix compresses and resizes images automatically and lazy loads images and videos by default. You don't need a plugin for either.
- Third-party apps and embeds are served from outside servers, and Wix says it "cannot optimize them."
- You can't edit or remove Wix's own JavaScript, even when a speed test flags it as unused.
Measure first: the Site Speed dashboard
Go to Site Speed in your site's dashboard. Wix's guide to understanding your Site Speed dashboard describes two sections.
Real visitor experience
This section uses data from real visits to your site and is available for all sites that meet the traffic threshold. It reports four metrics:
- First Contentful Paint (FCP): how long until the first text or image appears.
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the largest visible element, often the main image or headline, has loaded.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the page jumps around while it loads.
LCP, INP and CLS are Google's Core Web Vitals. Wix labels each metric Good, Fair or Poor using Google's ranges, and lets you switch between Desktop and Mobile. Each metric's tab shows the last 30 days, a per-page breakdown and a distribution. The per-page view is the useful one: it tells you which pages to work on.
Google PageSpeed simulation
This is a lab test that produces a score from 1 to 100. You can re-run it with Test again and compare results under View test history. Wix warns that the simulation "may be different than what your visitors actually experience", because it simulates a low-end device on a slow 4G connection.
So a red mobile score in Google's PageSpeed Insights does not mean the site is broken. The lab score is a stress test. If your real visitor metrics are Good, most visitors are having a fast experience. Mobile scores are also normally lower than desktop scores.
For a fuller explanation of the metrics and how Google uses them, see our guide to Wix site speed and Core Web Vitals.
What Wix already does for you
It helps to know what is handled automatically, so you don't try to fix it twice.
| Wix does this automatically | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Compresses and resizes images, and converts them to modern formats such as AVIF where possible | You don't need to run images through a separate compressor, as long as the originals are a sensible size |
| Lazy loads images and videos | Media further down the page loads as the visitor scrolls |
| Serves pages through a global CDN (a network of servers around the world) | Visitors are served from a location near them |
| Caches almost all pages, typically for up to a week, and clears the cache each time you publish | Repeat requests are served quickly; you don't manage a cache plugin |
Three kinds of page are never cached: pages viewed by logged-in members, Wix Site Search results and password-protected pages. If your slow pages are members-only, that is part of the reason.
Fix 1: lighten the top of the page
"Above the fold" means the part of a page visible before scrolling. Wix's performance best practices are direct about it: use light, static elements such as text, shapes and buttons above the fold, and keep videos, animations and slideshows below it.
- Open your slowest page from the Site Speed per-page list.
- Look at the first screen on a phone. List everything that moves, plays or slides.
- Replace a video background or slideshow with one static image and a clear headline.
- Move galleries, embedded video and social feeds further down the page.
- Remove entrance animations from the header and the first section.
- Publish, then check the dashboard again after real visitor data has had time to build up.
Lightboxes (pop-ups) are a special case. Wix says they load late by design, so limit how many you use, and avoid showing one the moment the page opens.
Fix 2: images, GIFs and video
Wix handles compression, so your job is to upload sensible originals and choose formats well.
- Keep originals well under 25 MB. Wix says images under 25 MB are compressed automatically. Its pages give different figures for the largest image you can upload at all, so don't rely on anything bigger. A photo straight from a modern camera or phone is almost always within that size.
- Avoid PNG unless you need a transparent background. Wix recommends AVIF over PNG in other cases.
- Convert animated GIFs to video. A GIF has to download fully before it plays, and Wix does not compress GIFs automatically.
- Trim galleries. Wix's Pro Gallery has an Adjust Quality option for optimizing gallery images in bulk. Fewer items per gallery also helps, especially on mobile.
- Treat embedded video as third-party content. Wix states that it cannot optimize embedded YouTube or Vimeo players. Keep them off the first screen.
Alt text, file formats and how Wix serves images are covered in more depth in image SEO on Wix.
Fix 3: apps, embeds and widgets
Every app adds code. Wix explains that "When you add apps and components to a page, JavaScript files are automatically added for them." Third-party apps and iframes, such as embedded video, social feeds, chat widgets and review widgets, are served from external servers, so Wix can't speed them up.
- List the apps on your site and remove any you no longer use.
- Spread apps across pages. A page with a booking widget, an Instagram feed, a chat box and a map carries all four.
- Move heavy embeds to secondary pages. A social feed belongs on a "Follow us" page more than on the homepage.
- If you're unsure which app is the heavy one, remove one at a time, publish, and retest the page in Google's PageSpeed Insights.
Fix 4: fonts and animations
Each font family and weight is another file to download. Wix says system fonts load faster than custom or uploaded fonts. Its articles differ slightly on the number to aim for, so treat about three fonts, and no more than three weights on a page, as the working limit.
Animations cost processing time, and that shows up most on phones. Keep them for one or two places where they help the visitor notice something, and keep them out of the first screen.
Fix 5: custom code and tracking tags
Custom code is any script you or a past developer pasted into Settings → Custom Code. Old snippets pile up over the years: a retired chat tool, a heatmap trial, an abandoned ad platform.
- Open Custom Code in your dashboard settings and read through the list.
- Turn off one snippet at a time using its toggle, and retest. Wix recommends this method for finding a problem snippet.
- Delete snippets for tools you no longer pay for.
- For scripts you keep, Wix advises adding the defer attribute where the provider allows it and placing the code at the end of the body.
For Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, the Meta Pixel and the TikTok Pixel, use Wix's Marketing Integrations. Wix states these tracking scripts do not work through Custom Code, and that its integrations "have less of an impact on your site's performance" than pasted marketing code. If you manage many tags, read our guide to Google Tag Manager on Wix, and keep the container tidy: each tag you add there is still code your visitors download.
Fix 6: mobile-specific slowdowns
If Desktop is Good and Mobile is Poor, work on the mobile view directly. Wix's suggestions:
- Hide elements that phone visitors don't need, using the mobile editor.
- Crop or resize large images for the mobile layout.
- Reduce the number of items in galleries and repeaters (repeating lists of cards).
Hiding elements can create layout gaps if it isn't done carefully. Our guide to fixing mobile layout problems on Wix shows how to tidy up afterward.
Cache settings you can control
Caching stores a ready-made copy of a page so it doesn't have to be built for each visitor. Wix manages this for you, with two controls worth knowing:
- Per page: in the page's settings, open Advanced Settings and select Manually control caching for this page. You can choose how often the cache resets, or "Never". This is for pages whose content changes on a schedule, and most sites can leave it alone.
- Site-wide: in your dashboard Settings, search for "Website Performance Settings". There you'll find Clear Site Cache and a setting called SWR, short for "stale while revalidate", which is on by default. Upgraded sites can turn it off.
What you can't change on Wix
| Item | Why it's fixed | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Wix's own JavaScript | Wix says code delivered through static.parastorage.com "is packaged by Wix" and you "cannot modify, manipulate, or delete" it | Ignore "reduce unused JavaScript" warnings that point to that address; reduce your own apps and code |
| Lazy loading | It can't be disabled | Nothing; it helps in most cases |
| Embedded YouTube and Vimeo players | They load from the video provider | Place them lower on the page or on their own page |
Wix also cautions that it "cannot guarantee the accuracy of third-party tests" and that "Some fixes suggested by third parties may be beyond your control." If a speed tool gives you a long list, sort it into things you can act on (media, apps, fonts, code) and things you can't.
These limits are part of the trade-off of a managed platform. If your site has done all of the above and still can't meet your targets, our overview of Wix technical SEO limits explains where the ceiling is and when another platform makes sense.
Conclusion
Start with the Site Speed dashboard, find your slowest pages by real visitor data, and lighten the first screen of each one. Then work through media, apps, fonts and old code, publishing and re-measuring as you go. Accept the parts Wix controls, and spend your time on the parts you do. Speed work pairs well with a wider review of the site, which our guide on how to audit a Wix site for SEO walks through. Frequently asked questions
Why is my Wix PageSpeed score low when the site feels fast?
The PageSpeed score is a lab simulation of a low-end phone on a slow 4G connection. Wix says a low lab score "doesn't mean your site is underperforming for real visitors." Check the Real visitor experience section of the Site Speed dashboard for what visitors get.
Why does the Site Speed dashboard show no data?
Wix shows site speed data only for sites that have received 10 or more site sessions in the last 7 days. A new or low-traffic site may need more visits before the dashboard fills in. In the meantime, Google's PageSpeed Insights can run a lab test on any public page.
Do I need to compress images before uploading them to Wix?
Usually not. Wix compresses and resizes images automatically and converts them to modern formats where possible. Keep originals well under 25 MB and avoid animated GIFs, which are not compressed automatically.
Will upgrading my Wix plan make my site faster?
Not in the ways that usually matter. Wix's advice for a slow site is about what is on your pages: media, apps, fonts, animations and code. Wix does say that on premium domains the page's HTML document is also served from its CDN, so a site on its own domain has that advantage over a free site.
Can I remove the unused JavaScript that PageSpeed Insights reports?
Only the part that comes from your own apps and custom code. Wix's own files, delivered from static.parastorage.com, can't be modified or deleted. Removing unused apps and old code snippets is the part you control.
